People didn't want to be patronised by strangers who interupted their private space and thoughts whilst they tried to go about their daily business.
Crazy.... who'd beieve it.
There was this woman in London once who was often on the 159 bus and would go up to people and say in a load, glib, patronising voice - "SMILE, COME ON SMILE, YOU CAN DO IT, DOESN'T HURT TO SMILE YOU KNOW..." and then if they refused she would go into one in front of everyone else therefor adding insult to injury by embarrasing the person she'd already annoyed and whose privacy she'd already invaded, something along the lines of "Oh my, well it doesn' hurt to smile does it that's all I'm saying...' blah blah etc.
Nevermind the fact that the person in question was not a child, would most likely love to be happy enough to warrant a smile but probably had their own comlicated problems in their lives which a mere request to smile from a stranger or a hug would realisticaly not solve...
I just told her I was busy thinking and would be smiling if I wanted to thank you very much.... |
