directnic is a good host.
godaddy is cheaper and usually reliable.

dreamweaver is a useful program for building web applications, but i agree with superhero that frontpage is horrid for html construction. it'll give you 60 tables to layout 2 pictures where you could have done the whole thing with a fraction of the code.

or you could ask/pay someone to help get you started. you're going to have to pay for a domain and hosting anyway.

if you're serious about building websites, then you might want to consider learning flash. i'm not a flash expert, but i think it's a better way to go.

lastly, surf the net for php templates. there's a billion of them out there and a lot of open source companies build stuff ready to go ... as well as users who are tweaking it and willing to share their work.

phpbb.com is the company that built this very forum. it's all open source and all free.

I was kind of hoping that in this day and age of easy click technology, that it'd be easy to just plop down a little money and set up a site.

I'm a little scared that I have to actually "know" stuff now. lol

I'd love to help you out Corea, but I'm really cutting back on the freelance work I do. I'm a web developer/designer at CBC.ca in the day, and i have a small handful of long-term clients I help in my free time.

I'm just trying to spend less time on the computer, to be frank. I don't need the money.

But I'm always willing to help out someone who wants to learn, so feel free to ask for help here.

When I first made my site, I searched high and low for a simple template that also looked decent. Lots of developers are using Flash or tricky photoshop templates these days and I just didn't feel like going through that learning curve.

The best site that I found for free templates is Steve's Templates. I use Dreamweaver for the coding and adding content and it is really a wonderful suite, especially since there is a huge database of addons an extensions that you can add to it to make it more functional or easier to use than it already is.
