| Allowing the Bloc Quebecois, a party dedicated to dismantling Canada to give Quebec independence, to be the official opposition in our government shows that we have the most ignorant government in the developed world. This is democracy gone too far. |

That is democracy. If enough people want to separate, a true democracy grants that wish. Democracy can't go to far, it would be called something then. |

My friend once was declared dead by Revenue Canada (he was in his mid-20s). He got a tax form saying since he was dead his estate had to file a final return. Basically to get yourself declared not dead yet, you have to show up at the tax office with some ID.
My only grief is after I moved to Seattle, my old company restated my T4 income and added $10,000. Naturally, this new T4 didn't get forwarded to my Seattle address and I filed my tax return based on 10K less income. Half a year later the government wanted 40% of that $10,000 of unreported income... I didn't think I should have had to pay the penalties. I noted I worked for a tax software company, it wasn't like I thought if I don't include a T4 slip I can cheat. Oh well. |

Would you allow 12 screaming disruptive kids to ruin your class? Of course not. So why does Canada allow the Bloc to mess with our policies?
The pupose of the government is to protect the country. America wouldn't allow a party like The Bloc a voice in national politics. And when I say America, I also mean the man on the street - not just the gov.
Everything has limits including democracy. If Canada were a true democracy, we could vote on paying taxes. Democracy is just a philosophy, not a law. Our gov. is stupid to allow an organization dedicated to destroying our country. |

Who the hell cares what Americans would do? What has that got to do with anything in that post?
The 12 screaming kids is just a stupid analogy.
You are now talking about a limited democracy, not a democracy. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but they are not the same. But if a province wants to leave a confederation, it should be allowed. What is a country anyway? What happens if they separate? Why shouldn't they separate if they want to? Are you against divorce |

It's not Revenue Canada that declares people dead. It's the ministry in charge of issuing the social insurance number...now it's the Ministry of Human Resources Development, I think. They are the ones who cancel the social insurance numbers. A person isn't officially dead unless that's been done. Someone with the same name as your friend's, and possibly the same date of birth, must have died and his family didn't provide the correct SIN with his death certificate. |

I'm not against divorce or allowing a province to leave. Quebec can pursue such a thing with their own provincial government. What I am against is them steering the whole ship (which is Canada). |

Correct. (I'm kind of writing in short hand.) I believe that was the problem. The dead person's SIN was close to my friend's and there was a typing mistake. The person at Rev Can told him this isn't particularly rare. All the same he did get his picture in the Toronto Sun. Makes for cute headlines. |

Actually, I've 'canceled' hundreds of people when I worked in the one office that can do so. Based on my experience, I'd say that if it was a problem with the SIN number, it could have happened as you described if the person wasn't looking at the screen at all. A person's name and date of birth pops up on screen after entering the SIN. It's essentially the same screen used to enter all the data needed to issue a SIN, the sequence of keys to enter is simply different. So, it's quite possible that someone forgot to check the screen and still managed to enter all the information because after a while, I simply memorized all the key sequences needed for any given operation (I had even memorized the postal codes of most of the residential areas of the greater Toronto region and Vancouver/Burnaby (many immigrants move there) to the point that I could tell which side of the street someone lived)). Since all the office workers type extremely fast, mistakes do happen that way. |
