The problem with this left/right spectrum is people SHOULD contradict themselves on the left/right scale depending on the issue.
Way too many people defend either ALL things left or ALL things right. Completely incapable of having their own opinions and think through each issue. If a party says its this side, they are suddenly full-on that side without thinking about it anymore except only to defend that side from then on.
I'd probably be pretty closest to Bucheon Bum's political views. I'd think anyways. He actually thinks about each issue separately regardless of political party's views on it.
I'm also just as likely to criticize either side just as quickly.. but left-leaning.. leaning be the operative word. |

So where do you put yourself on the list? Play the game dammit! |

EFL left Canuckstan off...so I'm going to take the liberty of putting her back on. She put herself at the bottom...but if she thinks EFL is more leftie than her good self....she can recorrect the list.

Well I thought only the guys wanted to play, which is fine with me.
I'm a lefty in the European style, not the NA variety so I'm not even sure I should be on this list since it's usually Dem vs Repub here and not much else--it reflects a very different political culture from what I'm used to--even in Quebec things are very different from the rest of the NA continent.
Think of the Scandinavian countries.
The irony is the cooperative (dare I say socialist?) movement is alive and well in smaller rural communities in the US yet many don't view it as being politically "leftist". Go figure. |

Actually, I didn't. When I posted, Canuck only had one post. I responded before Canuck's self-inclusion. At least, I think so...
Some very strange editing is going on on this thread. Things are rearranging and at least one post was removed.
Weird. |

I'm replying to that removed post.
-something about the ability to see others points of view or adjust your own when presented with new evidence- i'm entirely able to entertain two contradictory viewpoints at once becuase both usually have merit and elements of truth.
Not many peoples opinions are completely cohesive. |

I agree, even the term 'liberal' feels very foreign to me. I've also noticed that views that would be considered centrist in Europe are considered fringe left on this NA dominated board! |

I'm from the US, but I worked several years for a professor studying political culture. On a ten point scale, American Democrats and Republicans are around 4 and 6, respectively. Two party systems tend to gravitate towards the center.
Furthermore, the concept of left / right / liberal / conservative is being altered. For example, Bill Clinton was considered a raging liberal by most people, even though he was a fiscal conservative. Meanwhile, "conservative Republicans" have been running the largest deficits in the history of the US. Some of my former bosses points include:
http://chronicle.uchicago.edu/990415/clark.shtml
| Quote: |
The classic left-right dimension is transformed as the left becomes increasingly identified with social issues and less often with traditional class-politics issues.
Social and fiscal/economic issues are explicitly distinguished.
Social issues rise in importance relative to fiscal/economic issues.
Market individualism and social individualism are growing.
The welfare state is being questioned.
Issue politics and broader citizen participation are increasing while the power of hierarchical political organizations is declining.
Younger, more educated and affluent individuals and societies are more likely to exhibit the new political culture. |
Anyways, I've strayed far enough off-topic. In summary, that's why I find it so disingenuous to place myself on this scale. Especially when 5eagles places himself at the bottom. Not to mention the hypothetical placement of a misogynistic, anti-Semetic, Christian creationist, anti-government conspiracy theorist masquerading as America. |
