I had a similar experience to the OP a little while ago, I think there may be a thread about it somewhere.
My parents were coming to visit me in Busan, arriving in Seoul, and so I wanted to book two tickets on the KTX for them. My wife (who is Korean) was told that they couldn't because they didn't have foreign or Korean citizen id numbers. When she suggested that she book the tickets for them and that my parents pick them up, she was told that the id number and the person had to be the same.
When my wife suggested that this meant tourists could NEVER reserve a KTX ticket and so was seriously ****ed up, the clerk on the phone (very typically) seemed genuinely shocked that we would be angry at this, took great offence, and angrily retorted that the KTX was only for Koreans!
In the end, after a 12-hour flight from England my parents had to wait 6 hours in Seoul Station waiting for a train with all their luggage, eventually arriving in Busan at 1am.
I really should stop complaining and write to the KTO, I'm sick of this kind of thing. |

Its been that way for years with Korail. During World Cup I was going out and physically buying train tickets for Americans in the states and sending their tickets back because they didn't allow foreigners to make train reservations. That was crazy. Even today I have to go to the train station to get tickets if I want to take the train, my Korean friends make their reservations online all the time but because (like other Korean sites) the system doesnt recognize the ARC numbers.
Dont bother writing KNTO or the other so called "help centers for foreigners" they dont do squat |
