I read about it. Some people have hinted that the girl was coached and that the mother did it, not the father. |

I read this and can't believe how horrible it is for the girl. But why does the media only focus on the genital mutilation of only women?? When it happens to men all the time?
That said, I don't think any child (boy or girl) should be mutilated with this barbaric practice of circumcision. There's simply no need for it anymore, and I think it should stop.
Imposing your belief system on a child who can't even think yet is tragic. |

male circumcision is the fight against smegma.
smegma
n.
A sebaceous secretion, especially the whitish cheesy secretion that collects under the prepuce of the *beep* or around the clitoris.
Its not quite the same dude. I for one am glad that I have no smegma. |

Doesn't that definition imply women have smegma too? |

Don't forget, circumcision is common in the US, so it can't possibly be abusive, can it? |

That's stupid. It's like pulling out all of one's teeth in order to save the trouble of brushing them. People can just teach their kids to wash properly if they are worried about hygiene. |

The invention of the shower should void that reason for one thing...
There's an episode of "Penn & Teller's" bull**** on this issue. Watch it. You'll realise there are two main reasons why it exists still: mainly due to religious beliefs (sex for the sole purpose of reproduction, not pleasure).
It is also, in some cases, considered by mothers for their boys for "aesthetic reasons" (ie. a circumcised unit 'looks better'). In that episode, the father sort of fought his wife on this issue. Imagine a father insisting his preteen daughter gets breast implant surgery... same thing. Ugghhh.
Unfortunately, many men have to say "goodbye" to thousands of nerve endings and basically enjoy sex less. And we have no choice over the matter. Sad really.
p.s. sorry to change the subject of this post to male circ., but don't we all feel horrible when we think of the same thing happening to women??? |

but removing the clitoris is like cutting off the head of the *beep* entirely. (anybody visit ogrish lately?) If you want to equate a female genital modification with circumcision you need to talk about removing the clitoral hood only. |

He's a muslim. Its a muslim practise to remove a females evil joy button. Such abuse is only going to become more common with the spread of muslims around the globe.
how you can even compare male circumcision (for reasons of hygiene) to the removal of a clitoris (for reasons of chauvinistic islamic ideology)? |

Female circumcision is currently practiced in at least 28 countries stretching across the center of Africa north of the equator; it is not found in southern Africa or in the Arabic-speaking nations of North Africa, with the exception of Egypt.6 Female circumcision occurs among Muslims, Christians, animists and one Jewish sect, although no religion requires it.*

It appears, as I said before, that this is an African practice. If it was a Muslim practice per se, you would hear of it occurring in Kuwait, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq. We don't. It happens in places like Egypt, Mali, Senegal, Togo, Kenya. Male circumcision is a religious sanctioned practice by Jews and Muslims and some Christians do it out of a belief that it is hygienic. Many Christians from Europe and the Middle East do not circumcise their males. Female circumcision is to control the woman's sexuality, and it is not the same for male circumcision. Is male circumcision unecessary in this day and age? I don't know. I did read that in Africa some circumcized males had less of a chance of contracting aids. |

Female Circumcision in Iraq
Of 1,554 women and girls over 10 years old interviewed by WADIs local medical team, 907, or more than 60 percent, said they had had the operation.
The practice is known to exist throughout the Middle East, particularly in northern Saudi Arabia, southern Jordan, and Iraq. There is also circumstantial evidence to suggest it is present in Syria, western Iran, and southern Turkey.

Maybe not an official muslim practise, but many prominent Imams and Mullahs support female genital mutilation for reasons of "containing the sexual animal in women"

It should also be read into the record that, according to the stats, 90% of females in Ethiopia have been subjected to genital mutilation. And Ethiopia is about 67% non-Muslim. You can do the math.
