We are not indentured slaves. Any boss that thinks he can dictate what I do in MY FREE TIME, not even anywhere close to school property, would be quickly told to kiss my brown starfish. |

Is that at Myoungil?
Sounds awfully similar........Saffer coworker given Canadian jacket to wear(despite her BEd) ,screaming matches at current Koreans to get them to quit and hire others more cheaply...
I left. |

I BET IT WOULD BE FUN TO VISIT SOME OF THESE SCHOOLS JUST TO WATCH WHAT GOES ON. Even funnier to maybe show the owners these posts and get their reaction.... |

Let them fire you- and get it in writing. You'll be free to find another job. |

What? I can't believe how weak some people are. Why didn't that person just say that they wouldn't tolerate such restrictions on their liberty? |

Just a warning to anyone applying to jobs in Korea. If you are offered a position by a school called Kang's Academy in Namwon, Korea (who may be recruiting soon, if not already), please, please, please save yourself a lot of grief and decline the offer.
a friend of mine has been working there for a few months and the horror stories coming out of there match some of the worst i've read on Dave's boards over the years...these include
(1) being screamed at by the owners and the korean teacher
(2) treated like crap by the Korean teacher and told that you could be fired at anytime
(3) being forced to lie and say you are from Canada because they don't want to admit they hired a South African (racist Koreans!)
(4) being told they want a skinny blond girl and that my friend is no good because she's a little bit chubby (and I mean just a little)
(5) basically living an isolated existence in small town hell because the owners don't speak any English and she is never allowed to go out with the other native speakers in town - we have to meet her secretly and drop her off a couple of blocks away from the academy
(6) basically my friend says she has been scared for herself her entire time working there, the korean teacher is a complete *beep* and the owner doesn't have a clue what is going on
funny thing is she likes the town, just hates the academy |
(numbers are mine)
1. So just walk away when they start screaming. Let them scream at the wall. If they fire you so much the better then she is free to get a new job.
2. Then say "Good fire me. I want to be fired." Better yet call their bluff and resign. When the owner asks why tell the owner it's because of the Korean co-worker. Who do you think the owner would rather lose? It's a small town (as you said) and it will be a lot harder to get a native speaker there than replace the Korean co-worker.
3. South Africans are a race? No it's not racist. Being racist would mean that they would fire your friend if she was black. They probably think that "Canada" sounds better than "South African." But simply having a teacher lie about her nationality is not indictive of racist behaviour.
4. (see number 1) She doesn't have to listen to that garbage.
5. If she is that whimpy she should never have come here. Simply tell them to get lost.
6. THEN LET THE OWNER KNOW AND LET THE OWNER KNOW THAT SHE IS LEAVING UNLESS THINGS CHANGE. Maybe it will work maybe it won't. But she needs to start standing up for herself...or things will never change no matter what job she gets. |

being screamed at by the owners and the korean teacher
Put some ear plugs in when she screams. You can respond by saying, "Pardon me, What did you say?"
treated like crap by the Korean teacher and told that you could be fired at anytime
(Donald Trump) Due to your abuse as well as your inability to contribute to our team, You're fired!
being forced to lie and say you are from Canada because they don't want to admit they hired a South African (racist Koreans!)
Article 5 (Equal Treatment)
An employer shall not discriminate against workers by sex, or take discriminatory treatment in relation to the conditions of employment according to nationality, religion or social status.
Article 6 (Prohibition of Forced Labor)
An employer shall not force a worker to work against his own free will through the use of violence, intimidation, confinement or by any other means which unjustly restrict mental or physical freedom.
Article 16 (Definition of Work)
The term work in this Act means both mental and physical work.

While the rest of your advice is sound, Article 5 does not apply in this case. Asking a teacher to tell the children she is from a different country is not discrimination. The key words here are "conditions of employment"
Paying her less or giving her longer working hours or something like that BECAUSE she is from South Africa...now THAT would be discrimination. |

Surely having to lie to children about her nationality is a condition of her workplace, ie :
con‧di‧tion [kuhn-dish-uhn]
7. Usually, conditions. existing circumstances: poor living conditions.
Being forced to lie about one's country seems to be an "existing circumstance" for this person and therefore a condition of her workplace.
It really depends on what that "or" means. Does it mean they can't discriminate based on sex but can on nationality where it is unrelated to the conditions of work? I think not.
As defined by the TheUrbanMyth, calling someone a lazy Canadian or a stupid American would not be covered by this article, as this has no effect on the"conditions of employment", "Paying her less or giving her longer working hours or something like that". Seems like a rather sophistic distinction.
Anything that makes a teacher uncomfortable because of their sex, a nationality, race or religion should be considered discrimination
Discriminate means to treat someone differently on the grounds of appearance (ie being ugly or fat or pretty),race, sex, religion or nationality or any other factors which have no relation to that person's performance of their work. |

My wonjang advertised me as Canadian. When the students commented on this I always told them I was Australian. Heheheh. Now they know he's a liar. Mongrels still keep coming to my school though... |

1. So if the female teacher was forced to share her apartment with a male room mate and that made her "uncomfortable" that would be discrimination? Give it a rest.
2. And that is not happening here. In fact if it's anything like a typical hakwon she is likely being treated BETTER than her Korean co-workers with higher pay and a free apartment. |
