Some of my kids are playing "war" with some really realistic BB guns. It looks like these suckers shoot little rubber BBs. I'm sure someone is gonna shoot an eye out and this ain't your father's Red Ryder BB Gun:

Only the kids?! You don't know what you're missing. As young soldiers, we would buy a gun, put on our goggles, and flak-vests, use ironing boards as a shield and have our own battles in the barracks and near-by hooker hill(only place outside where locals wouldn't complain, to the police that is). Course, the prostitues would step out to see what was going on and get caught in the crossfire!
Great times...until some other guy bought an automatic version of an M-16 then there was no contest. We stopped soon after. Get some teachers together, pick a solitary place in the woods or abandoned homes and have a go. Just wear eye protection cause you will get these little purple welts that sting. |

I have a replica 1911 Colt .45 that shoots 6mm plastic BBs.
I use it for teaching my elementary students gun safety.  |

| The guns don't have the power of the bb guns from back home. I don't see a problem since I see the kids wearing thick sweatshirts and goggles when they play. My only issue is that they may break a window or think it's fun to point at other people. |

these guns are great. they shoot far and fast and it does hurt, but not enough to cause any significant damage. kinda like paintball lite.
my buddy and i were walking through our neighborhood about a month ago, and these two kids came up with their ak-47s. one tried to ddoong-chim me with the bayonet... it was funny, and then his little sister shot me.
so it was on. we went back to our apartments and got OUR guns AND GOT REVENGE. we crept up on the little bastards and shot the living shit out of them.
a 1 hour neighborhood-wide firefight ensued, and i don't think i've laughed that hard in years...
"dude, what did you do on sunday"
"uhh... we played guns, man"
the only collateral damage was a small crowd of 16-year-old sauntering ajosshi larvae dandies who were busy preening and talking about starcraft.
PING! PING!
"aiiisssshee!" they were super angry, and ready to slap out their juniors, but when they realized that exactly half of the salvo came from adults, they were culturally dumbfounded.
a great day. |

These "toy" guns are not new. Three years ago in Iksan I was walking in a street near my school and I heard the distinctive sound of one of these guns. A bus was passing so I guess that's where it came from.
A pellet hit me in the face only 1 cm away from my right eye. I was so close to being blinded in that eye. Quite apart from the potential loss of sight, it really hurt. Both eyes watered and I couldn't see for a couple of minutes.
There was no way I could have identified the culprit.
My guess is that he was not really trying to hurt me - he was just being stupid. But his stupidity could have cost me an eye! |

Are the bullets rubber or are they plastic? And are they bright yellow and look like those little Lemon-C candies? And are there other colours like lime green and orange? Specifically, do they look like these?
Because I've been finding tiny little plastic balls (pellets?) like those all over the construction site we're preparing.
 
They must be breaking in and playing there at night, because there's a crew working there from early morning. That would also explain why there are so many of the pellets lying around, they couldn't see well enough to retrieve them at night. The pellets aren't a problem, it's just a dangerous place for kids to be playing, especially at night. They're not in school Sundays... I'm going to check if they're there right now. Bringing a can of whoop-ass with me, just in case they're armed! 
Will report my findings later. |

That advice is three years too late for me but may help new arrivals to the Land of the Morning Calm. However, I doubt it would be practical to hide from every passing bus.
Perhaps foreign teachers could be issued with full body armour including face masks like the Korean riot police wear. Now that's an interesting thought !
Full marks to Ron Stevens for smashing that potential terrorist's toy gun. I wish I could have done that, or worse, to the little monster who shot me with a pellet gun. |
