Report: 6 Arab countries announce plans for nuclear programs

By Haaretz Service

Six Arab states have announced plans to embark on programs to develop nuclear energy, according to a report by the Times of London.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the countries involved are Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates.

The report states that the move, which follows the failure by the West to curb Iran's controversial nuclear program, may signal an upcoming rapid spread of nuclear reactors in the Middle East and North Africa

the priorities of middle eastern countries are grand.

More reason to:

1. Pull out of Iraq
2. Launch a nice little bombing on Iran

That might actually deter others from embracing nuke technology.

And yes, I know this is about nuke energy and not weapons, but let's not be naive here. You can bet at least one of them will use this program to take steps towards becoming a nuke power.

In a related issue, it's common knowlege or a common assumption at least, that Israel has nuclear weapons, some say 200 some 400 nulcar warheads.

Israel 'may have 200 nuclear weapons'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/892941.stm

When did Israel test their nuclear weapons program?

If they didn't have a nuclear weapons program, then they must have gotten their nukes from someone and we all know that "someone' to be the United States.

[edit: looks like France helped Israel build their first nuke plant in the late 1950s]

Why doesn't Isreal give up its nukes?

I think it's great that the Arab nations are getting to together to develop nukes. Now what is the US gonna do, bomb everyone?

Unfortunately America went after the decoy (Iraq) but ignored the real threat.

Without necessarily disagreeing with you, let me say these two options suck. Which is why neither of the two will happen in the next two years, necessary evils or not.

So, Iran develops a nuclear weapon program, and what follows is news that six other Arab states are too, and you jump on Israel, which has had nukes for decades?

Very clearly it is not Israel that the other Arab states are worried about.

It is a very worrisome development. At very least no one is going to be fooled by explanations that these countries are only pursuing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. "Our country desperately needs energy. It's not like we have some liquid oozing out of the ground that we could burn, right?"

Well Tunisia doesn't have any oil and Egypt is quickly running out of it, so they could legitimately use that argument.

Agreed. And there is an additional, more pressing Mid-East nuclear issue to consider as well:

What happens in Pakistan when Musharraf goes...?
