Any outrage about THIS conservatives? I mean,Kerry insulting the President was such a good one...

Quote:
Frank Schaeffer: I should be supporting Allen. Instead, I'm leaving the party.

07:52 AM CST on Wednesday, November 1, 2006

I'm a Christian, a writer, a military parent and a registered Republican.

On all those counts, I was disgusted by an e-mail I just received that's being circulated by campaign supporters of Republican George Allen, who's trying to retain his Senate seat in Virginia.

The message goes like this: "First, it was the Catholic priests, then it was Mark Foley, and now Jim Webb, whose sleazy novels discuss sex between very young teenagers. ... Hmmm, sounds like a perverted pedophile to me! Pass the word that we do not need any more pedophiles in office."

Democrat James Webb is a war hero and former Marine, wounded in Vietnam and winner of the Navy Cross. He was writing about class and military issues long before me and has articulated the issue of how the elites have dropped the ball on military service in his classic novel Fields of Fire. By the way, that's a book Tom Wolfe calls "the greatest of the Vietnam novels."

Mr. Webb's son is a Marine in Iraq. That's an uncommon fact in this era in which most political leaders' children act as if it is only right and proper that it's someone else's war to fight.

Mr. Webb also happens to be running against a desperate opponent supported by people who circulated the stupid e-mail, something that reminds me of a 2000 smear campaign aimed at another war hero, John McCain.

///

But enough is enough. I've had it with Republican smears.

The Webb e-mail is the embodiment of the cynical Republican strategists..

According to the Allen camp's logic, God would be a pedophile, too. After all, we Christians believe God inspired the Bible. And God-the-author chose to include the "sleazy" story about Lot offering to send out his young virgin daughters to be raped by the men of Sodom.

The Bible has masturbation scenes, rape, pedophilia and God's favorite man King David warming himself with a young virgin in his old age. He's the same man God tells us committed murder after he indulged his peeping Tom fantasies.

Lucky for God-the-author that He's not running against George Allen.

///

My wife and I have reached the tipping point. We plan to go to town hall to dump our Republican voter registration and reregister as independents. ...

Wartime demands leaders with character and moral authority. The political party smearing Mr. Webb proves it has neither.

Frank Schaeffer is the author of "Baby Jack," a novel about Marines.

Lol. Smells like desperation to me. No matter what happens in this race, good ole' Macaca will never be allowed to run for president and I suspect he will lose this race as well, so let them try. It's funny how they mention Foley, he was republican wasn't he???????? Doublespeak comes full circle in America circa 1984, oops, I mean 2006.

As far as smears go they come from both sides and have been happening through out our history.

The smear as stated above is particularly repulsive.

Apparently the responsible party (Campaign Staffer) has been fired.
I also understand criminal charges may be filed.

Apology to follow.

Does any one remember Tippa Canoe and Tyler Too!

Hmm, I can't remember a Dem doing the same. Oh, but read this.

Quote:
When his term on the court ended, he chose not to run for re-election. I later learned another reason why. Kennedy had spent years on the bench as a juvenile and family-court judge, during which time he had developed a strong interest in aiding abused children. In the early 1980s he had helped to start the Children's Trust Fund of Alabama, and he later established the Corporate Foundation for Children, a private, nonprofit organization. At the time of the race he had just served a term as president of the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse and Neglect. One of Rove's signature tactics is to attack an opponent on the very front that seems unassailable. Kennedy was no exception.

Some of Kennedy's campaign commercials touted his volunteer work, including one that showed him holding hands with children. "We were trying to counter the positives from that ad," a former Rove staffer told me, explaining that some within the See camp initiated a whisper campaign that Kennedy was a pedophile. "It was our standard practice to use the University of Alabama Law School to disseminate whisper-campaign information," the staffer went on. "That was a major device we used for the transmission of this stuff. The students at the law school are from all over the state, and that's one of the ways that Karl got the information outhe knew the law students would take it back to their home towns and it would get out." This would create the impression that the lie was in fact common knowledge across the state. "What Rove does," says Joe Perkins, "is try to make something so bad for a family that the candidate will not subject the family to the hardship. Mark is not your typical Alabama macho, beer-drinkin', tobacco-chewin', pickup-drivin' kind of guy. He is a small, well-groomed, well-educated family man, and what they tried to do was make him look like a homosexual pedophile. That was really, really hard to take."

The funny thing is there is a state senate seat in Oregon where the Majority Leader Karen Minnis used a group set up one of her close friends to put out mailers saying the challanger Rob Brading supported child porn. Brading who was a member of the library board opposed filters on library computers. It was a professional hit job.

But the tables turned, because a story leaked that her brother in law harassed one of the employees at their business and they covered it up by paying her off with $20,000 and failed to report it to authorities.

I hope she loses and bad.

I don't know what can be done, in practical terms, about this kind of smear tactic, but I do wish SOMETHING could.

He had to burn money to answer the charge. It's going to be the most expensive race for the Oregon Legislature in the history of the state.

I would be in favor of extending the libel and slander laws to cover this situation, but I doubt there is any way to do it without making every single campaign potentially they subject of a lawsuit.

Current laws cover the situation. Politicians nor groups have any protection from them. If someon chose, they could file charges. Why they don't is the mystery.
