I thought this little gem from CNN.com would add some interesting fodder for the conversation in the "Proud to be an Atheist" thread~

"Father Ted" is just another wolf in sheeps clothing, of the sort prophesied in the bible a long time ago. Many false prophets will arise and mislead many...etc etc.

I love the interview where the reporter caught him at his house.

He says he bought meth on several occasions, but "threw it away" and never used it.

Also, he hired the male prostitute for a "massage."

All that happened was this man was a good speaker, found a way to make a lot of money off of that talent (leading a church), and probably never believed any of it. To him, it wasn't a mission, it was a job.

Him being gay is not at all bad. Him being gay and condemning others exactly like himself in order to make a buck is disgusting.

Isn't this just further proof that the more rabidly homophobic you are the gayer you are?? Protesting too much and all that...

Too much repression makes a gay guy a republican, protestant evangelical.

Your average hetero isn't as obsessed about "homosexuals" as some of these right-wing religious freaks.
I have little doubt many of the worst gay-bashng Evangelical types are deep in the closet. Or suffering from serious psycho-baggage which propels their zealotry in trying to dictate their version of "morals" to the masses.
Mr Haggard and his ilk have have worked very hard to make literally millions of people feel ashamed of who they are. And look what he's been doing! Freud would have a field day.
The hypocrisy has become much worse since they've begun to mix their religion with right-wing politics. It's huge $ in America. Haggard is nothing more than an opportunistic sleaze-ball.

This has been a stereotype for quite a while, but sometimes it makes you wonder if this stereotype isn't just too true to be funny. And it makes me wonder about some of the posters on that thread about a gay guy meeting someone. Very Happy Could we have a Reverend Ted or two here at Dave's?

I need to apologize to the readers of this thread. My original post was a bit mean-spirited. I have read Ted and Gayle Haggard's statements on their church website, and my heart is filled with sadness for both of them. I pray for their healing, and encourage everyone else to do the same. I am not an evangelical, but I believe the same Spirit ties us all together, and in that Spirit I hope for their peace and healing.

Peace

Sure, if by 'healing' you mean them and their followers drop the fundy nonsense and out goup persecution. Of course to do that what's needed is a healthy dose of Reason not unctuous religious prattle about 'Spirit' and 'healing'.

Personally I'm not that forgiving when these (as it turns out hypocritical) types use god and the bible to try to influence and create legislation which denies others basic human rights.

The man was a sinner who confessed to God that fact.

He also has confesssed for his recent sins:

""I am guilty of sexual immorality ... I am a deceiver and a liar. There is a part of my life that is so repulsive and dark that I've been warring against it all of my adult life," Haggard said in the letter, which was reads by a church overseer during a Sunday morning service.

"... from time to time, the dirt that I thought was gone would resurface, and I would find myself thinking thoughts and experiencing desires that were contrary to everything I believe and teach," he said."

He says the struggle he has had against these sins has been something he's fought all his adult life.

"I've been warring against it all of my adult life,"

This is no different than the woman caught in adultery. And those who caught her in the act wanted to stone her.

Jesus Christ said to them, "He that is without sin cast the first stone."

Look at all of you casting stones. How many of you are without sin?

All of man's rights are given to him by God. Show us where you get the authority to claim it is a 'basic human right' to engage in homosexual activity.

We aren't bloody hypocrites telling people they are going to hell for those things either.

Granted, but you're a hypocrite just as much as he is because you are condemning him when you yourself are not without sin.

Ro 2:3

So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God's judgment?

Mt 7:2

For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

God will judge us in the same manner we judge others.

Selah.
