I was just told I needed to hand in a list tomorrow for English books for our school library. Apparently as of this moment there is only one English book in there and it is '5 people you meet in Heaven' by Mitch Albom. What other books do you all suggest is a must order?

You're doing public middle school, right?

- Manga comic books translated into English.

- Teen magazines like Seventeen, Cosmogirl, and Ellegirl.

- Traditional children's classics like CS Lewis.

- Series teen books like the Animorphs by KA Applegate.

- Books from the Oxford Bookworms young readers series level 1-4.

- Books about English speaking countries with lots of photos (coffee table books, basically).

All of the above you can get at major bookstores in Korea, but American and British teen mags are a rip-off. I'd suggest subscribing to a few and getting them a month late. They find Seventeen the most interesting but it's also the most vain. Ellegirl has the best articles but it's too difficult for most MS students to read.

I'd also recommend English-language Anime magazines.

Ron Roy's A to Z Mysteries
Burns and Metz's Wright and Wong mystery series
"Lemony Snicket's" A Series of Unfortunate Events series

Some non-fiction books might be nice, too. Capstone Press has some great topical collections:

...especially Fact Finders, Social Studies Collections, Blazers, Snap Books, Graphic Library, Edge Books, and Bridgestone Books. These are very good for upper-grade curriculum topics at an easier reading level. They are starting to translate these books into Korean, and I'm actually using the Pebble books for my own Korean language study.
