Skype is clearly the winner here, especially for those from North America. SkypeOut is free to all North American phone numbers.
Personally speaking, there are better per-second callrates to Australia from the new VOIP app built into the Yahoo! Messenger than Skype, but the difference is mere cents.

Yes, I'm sure people will sit at home just to wait for a call to save 3 cents...
I bet you also think the horse-drawn carriage will roar back with a vengance given the fuel costs these days, huh? |
too bad a horse still costs more to maintain then a car ....
What i am trying to say is you should not dismiss landlines just yet.
At my ISP we sold VOIP to individuals and business thrue fixed lines. Basicly a raw copper with internetacces.
There was so much demand the hardware production couldn't follow, the installations couldn't follow etc ... |

Not quite. It's free to call North America from within North America, but regular rates apply otherwise. No deals for those of us in Korea. More info here |

Ahh that's a pity. I didn't realise that, but it makes a lot of sense. :D
Thanks.

Gizmo doesn't seem to be functionally different from any of the PC-to-PC programs that have been around since 1996's Internet Phone from Vocaltec. Their PC-to-Phone service would have been considered cheap two years ago, but things have changed with the explosion of cheap services like Skype and Yahoo.
A far better deal is the collection of SIP offerings from Finarea, of which voipstunt is a part. There are many such Finarea fronts (sipdiscount.com is another well-known one), which you patch into using an SIP softphone (Gizmo will do this). They don't just do free to the US, but a big long list of developed and semi-developed countries.
The basic deal is this: throw 10 Euro at them and enjoy free calling to anyone in their list of countries for 120 or 180 days (depending on the deal). There's a limit of 300 minutes a week of the free ones, after which you pay 1c/min, deducted from the 10 Euro ... but really, how many weeks will most people use more than five hours?
Here's voipstunt's list of free countries:
Argentina
Australia
Austria
Belgium
Canada
Chile
China
Denmark
Finland
France
Germany
Hong Kong
Hungary
Iceland
Ireland
Italy
Japan
Liechtenstein
Luxembourg
Malaysia
Monaco
Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Portugal
Singapore
South Korea
Spain
Sweden
Taiwan
United Kingdom
USA (+mobile)
I've used Finarea's sipdiscount offering for two months, and am very happy with the service. It's much less of a resource hog than Skype, and seems more reliable than Skype or Yahoo, and with better sound quality. I use X-lite to patch into it, but Gizmo will work, too.
$3/month for long distance to landlines is hard to beat. |

I'd be more inclined to go with a service that offers proper SIP support. That way I can use any VOIP software on my computer and let the VOIP service providers battle it out to provide me with PSTN to VOIP services for cheeeep.
Does anyone know of a company that provides Korean landline callIN numbers ? And is SIP based ideally. |

Vonage now has a mobile phone that (if you are a customer) you can use to make VoIP calls anywhere there is a WiFi hotspot. Your home wireless network, airports, whatever. This works anywhere in the world that you can get access. The phone is like US$90.
Something else to consider. |

You see, you can have a relative back in North America buy the Voicepulse or Vonage hardware (or whatever company you like), ship it over to you, and you then make international calls as if they were local.
If anyone has VOIP, which company do you like best? Also, which broadband provider works best for VOIP?
Cheers.[/quote]
Before i left my dad bought me the vonage the v-phone so I could have a South Carolina number. I love it. The sound quality is great and I just spent two hours on the phone with my husband and my best friend.
It's well worth $25 a month to be able to talk to my folks, best friend, old boss etc. whenever I want. |

I could NOT live w/o my Vonage! I talk to at last 1 person every day. Between my mom, daughter, grandmothers, friends, other relatives and taking care of business I get more than i pay for. Especially with the referral bonus. Every time someone signs up for service thru my referral they get the router and 1 month service for free.
I get 2 months FREE. I don't even pay for my vonage service anymore.
I'm too cheap to shell out for the port phone so I took my router home on vacation, plugged it into mom's cable line, and voila, my phone worked. I really like not being tied to the computer to talk. The cordless goes all over the apt with me.
If you want a referral, pm. |

If you go to Skype.com they tell u only till the end of the year are the calls free for US and Canada...
I brought my Vonage with me to SK last year and had a phone for it and one for Korea...kept my virtual number in the states...love calling 7 digit numbers....for free
Skype is cheap..but if you have Vonage..free is better than cheap...but I think Skype international calls are cheaper than the Vonage cents per min.. |
