What have your experiences been like (good & bad) with the post office here?

Recently, I have had two parcels delivered that look like they've been through the war. Who knows? Maybe they went through the DMZ. Smile. Miraculously, the contents were not destroyed in one case. In the other case, I had a dvd plastic case smashed pretty badly. No big deal because the dvds were okay and the case cost 500 won to replace.

1. The post office has worked great for me here and even when I was new and didn't know much Korean, the clerks were helpful and could communicate well.

2. This does belong in the General Discussion forum.

Does it actually make that much difference? and do you have anything to say that's actually related to the thread?

Sending stuff from Korea has worked very, very well for me. The people at the post office have always been helpful, it's way cheaper than I would have expected, and everything's arrived intact with no problems.

Receiving stuff... nothing's gone missing yet, but a couple of things have been late. Once they delivered a package to my neighbour to give to me because I wasn't home. The second-last package I got here looked like Customs had had a rousing game of football with it and then left it sitting out in the heat. Stuff was broken and all the chocolate was melted.

Since I moved to this new apartment they have an annoying habit of calling me at ridiculous times... seven or eight AM... to verify my address or some such thing. I'm not sure why. It's not like the address is unclear or anything.

Over the years I've had stuff go missing both to and from here and most everything sent from here seems to arrive with some damage to the package if not the contents - but I can't say how much of that is due to the Korean post office, customs, the overseas transport doo-hickies or the postal service in the places I send to.

I've sent things to America that didn't arrive. I've had things sent to me that I never got.

Check this - I wrote it back in September:

http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=65824&highlight=

...it's about my more recent experience at the post office. And despite what someone said earlier, speaking Korean doesn't necessarily mean there won't be a problem...nor an excuse offered to you...

Wow! A lot of horror stories on this thread. They makes me weary of doing any mail order (especially international).

I shop on Ebay and the last two things I bought came with the packages badly smashed. One of them was a 12" record and when I saw that two of the corners had been severely bent, I was sure the disc must have been cracked. To my complete surprise and good luck, it wasn't.

These experiences make me very hesitant to do much mail ordering in the future (especially breakable stuff). Very Happy I do think the Korean postal service is at fault. Korean people seem to generally have a carefree attitude to everything. Sometimes this is good. Somethimes this is bad.
