Well, it's begun.

Iowa governor announces White House bid
Vilsack becomes first Democrat to declare candidacy

You can read all about it here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15635323/

Likewise, Rep. Duncan Hunter of California is the only announced candidate on the Republican side.

I haven't even heard of him.

At least I'm aware of the existence of Vilsack. He's the former governor of my home state. I know nothing about him. He was in office while I have been out of the country. My mom likes him, and I am sure that will carry a lot of weight with people interested in politics.

On the one hand, I think it's good. I think the nominee should be a governor. I want a president with executive experience...a lot of executive experience. Success in the Senate is not a good indication of future success as an executive, just as success as a campaigner is no good indication of success as an office-holder.

Anyway, a governor of a small state is not the best candidate, although it didn't hurt Clinton or Carter. A governor from a state with a considerable Electoral College clout would be a better choice.

The main thing I have against him is that his candidacy has the potential to distort the caucuses in Jan. '08. A 'favorite son' with no real hope prevents the real potential winners from showing what they can do.

Anyway, THE RACE IS ON!!! (Giving the public a whole year to burn out before the official race even begins.)

That's the funny thing about presidential elections.

They're frequently populated by people not from DC.

Who knew Clinton before he showed up?

Who knew Bush?

Who knew Lieberman?

Rather, in the Clinton/Bush pattern, governors seem to be the ripest crop for the white house.

As such, I'll throw out 2 names:

1)Bill Richardson, governor of New Mexico.

Pro: Can carry the Hispanic vote, well-respected

Con: Gets associated with Hispanics

2) Evan Bayh, Senator from Indiana

Pro: Former Governor, relatively young, could carry Indiana

Con: Is in DC, so has a voting record that can be assailed

I'll write Hillary off as a "lightning rod" (the word du jour).

Obama because he's black.

But maybe either as VP.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not saying that to be racist. I'm just from the heartland and, although he's played in Peoria, I'm not too sure he'll have wider appeal at this point. Too young. A black guy will have to establish himself very firmly in politics (a la Powell) to have a fighting chance for the head office.

I think both Richardson and Bayh are stronger candidates than Vilsack. They both have executive experience and experience at the national/international level. (Richardson was the UN ambassador.)

I think Obama will have no real problems because he's black. Right now, he's too young and inexperienced. He's only been in the Senate a short time and has no major executive experience. He does have charisma. He's a better bet in 10 or 20 years. Let him get a few years under his belt and see if he has legs on him.

I agree about Clinton. She's too polarizing, through no fault of her own. I hope she doesn't run. She's more effective as a fund-raiser. The Dems should be looking for someone who won't start off the campaign with half the country scared of/angry at her.

Obama because he's awesome. He's already older than JFK was when he became president. I say strike while the iron is hot. Just get a much more experienced person to run as VP and that'll take care of the question of experience. Experience and age only matters a lot when you can tell a person is going to try to go it alone (ie, be very partisan and ignore ideas from the other side).

WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain, considered the front-runner for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, intends to launch an exploratory committee next week, GOP officials said Friday.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid pre-empting a public statement from the four-term Arizona senator.

All we need now is for Terry Branstad to take a go at it. (He certainly has the experience necessary for comatose leadership, what with his 15,000 years as governor.)

I blame the Boy Governor for Iowa missing out on the last quarter of the 20th Century.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, a moderate Republican best known for his stewardship of the city after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, has taken the first step in a 2008 presidential bid, GOP officials said Monday.
