Israeli raid 'kills 18 civilians'

At least 18 Palestinians have been killed and 40 wounded by Israel tank fire in the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanoun, Palestinian sources have said.

Palestinian officials said Israeli troops fired on houses, and that women and children were among the dead.

The Israeli army has said it fired shells in response to rocket fire by
militants. It said it was checking reports of civilian casualties.

The Israelis withdrew from the town on Tuesday following a major offensive.

TV footage from the Beit Hanoun incident showed the victims being taken to hospital in their sleeping clothes, some with terrible injuries.

"It is the saddest scene and images I have ever seen. We saw legs, we saw heads, we saw hands scattered in the street," 22-year-old eyewitness Attaf Hamad told Reuters news agency.

"I saw people coming out of a house covered in blood. I started screaming to wake up the neighbours."

Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniya, of the ruling Hamas militant faction, called for an immediate session of the United Nations in response to the incident, calling it a "massacre".

Mr Haniya said efforts to form a national unity government with the Fatah movement would be suspended in protest.

Local Hamas leader Nizar Rayan vowed to launch more rockets at Israel in retaliation.

It is quite possible that this was an accident, not that the Palestinian side would accept such a claim. At any rate, the carnage in Gaza is not a peace-building measure anymore than including an Israeli political leader as deputy minister who thought Turkey's expulsion of Greeks in Cyprus is a model Israel should follow. I suppose all this carnage was a way for Olmert to try to boost his lack of popularity. However, his popularity went down after an ill-fated invasion of Lebanon. Israel did not really achieve anything positive in Gaza. They have no Shalit, only carnage among Palestinians, and a Hamas that is now boosted and there is now less internal criticism of Hamas after the assaults increased in intensity. I know some would support that, but I think it is unproductive and too many civilians have been killed. Many Jews find the actions of the government to be a source of shame and a show of incompetency in a government that claimed it would bring prosperity and stability to
Israel.

Yes there is. I posted this thread about half an hour after the other one. I did't see the other one. If a moderator wants to merge threads or delete this one. It's fine with me.

It's a wonder that the Paliosimians still persist in firing rockets into Israeli territory! Haven't they a care for their own people... Sad

So if foreign occupiers came to occupy you and yours, grabbed your land, water, subjected you to various collective punishments and herded you into ghettoes, you'd just sit around smoking spliffs?

More regrettable collateral damage. The poor IDF - those nasty resistance fighters made them do it. If only those Arabs would all just go extinct and give up all that lovely real estate they're sitting on...

Survivors tell harrowing tales of Israeli barrage

Quote:
Scorched fragments of clothes, a girl's slipper and body parts lay strewn in pools of blood in front of a row of houses that was riddled by what witnesses said was an Israeli artillery strike today while Palestinian residents slept.

The Palestinian health ministry said 18 people from an extended family were killed, including 10 children and seven women. About 60 people were wounded, the ministry said.

Quote:
"Projectiles were fired directly onto the people who were rushing out of the house," he said. "There was blood everywhere. I saw my neighbor, Sakher Adwan, he went to get his sister, and he was killed."

Quote:
"I opened my window and I looked out and I saw a shell hit a neighbor's house ... When I came out, another shell had hit the house," he said. "We took dismembered bodies from the houses. we saw legs, hands, parts of heads stuck to the wall, it was disgusting. There was a stench of blood and (burned) flesh."

Sigh...depressing stuff.

Quote:
Israel enjoys overwhelming military superiority over its Palestinian enemies, but there was no military or indeed any other logic to yesterday's killing of 18 people, at least 14 of them members of one sleeping family, in the northern Gaza Strip. International and regional reactions to the carnage were grimly predictable. The US called on Israel to exercise "restraint", noting its "regret" at civilian casualties and the launch of an inquiry into how a residential area had come under artillery fire. The EU said it was "appalled". The Palestinian movement Hamas called for swift retaliation. Islamic Jihad promised suicide bombings. Sadly, only the latter statements carried much conviction.

The Palestinians are on their own again...and that's never good news - for anybody.

Whatever, dude. If you are still buying into that "grabbed your land" bulla, good luck! There's no way that Israel is going to concede to 7th century cave-dwellers who don't know when to give up. And, they do have a legitimate claim to to land. And, security is an issue, whether you care to agree or not. It's really a no-brainer...if Israel continues to take lethal fire from the pals side then, you can, and will expect... retaliation! And, w/ the Jooooo's we're not talking about rocks in slingshots or half-baked rockets.... Very Happy I'm only sorry that it wasn't 18,000! Shocked
