|
|
I have just started seriously applying to schools but I am not available until March 1. Most ads I have found are for immediate starts and a few recruiters have called me, but are not interested when they find out that I can't leave yet. However, I have found a few schools that are already hiring for March and are interested in starting the application process. Is it a good sign that the schools are preparing so far ahead? I know that if I wait, I will have more to choose from, but I just don't want to wait until the last minute. I am planning to put in a 3-4week notice for my current job in January, so I want to have something lined up before then. Any thoughts? |

I check the boards frequently (for many countries), and for Korea, if they are hiring like that, it usually means GOOD, for many reasons. |

If you are the sort of person who plans ahead, perhaps you are not the personality type who would be comfortable here in Korea. I'm kind of joking, but not entirely. Most schools of all types here do not plan 4 months ahead. The reason recruiters are not interested in you is because their clients waited until the last possible second, or even beyond, and now are desperate for someone RIGHT NOW.
I say, stick to your guns. Say when you will be available. If a job comes along where the administration has planned a bit ahead, I'd say it's a good sign. |

But I'd first demand they submit to a drug test. |

Ha, ha. That was a good one.
By "drug test," do you mean testing whether they are currently on drugs, or whether they SHOULD be on drugs?

And check their passport. I'd be highly surprised if they were really Korean. |

JongnoGuru is not kidding about making sure you can handle last-minute stuff. Two months ago my school mentioned I would have to move sometime in November. No word for the next two months and then boom -- got the call today. "You're heading out tomorrow, please have all your stuff ready and be home between 2 and 3 pm." |

I've been browsing the forums for quite a while so I've gathered that in Korea, things are generally done at the last minute. I think I'll be able to adapt (even though it will probably irritate me no end).
I'm just planning ahead because of the position I'm in now. I agreed to go on a trip to Europe with a friend of mine from February 17-27.
We have been talking about taking a trip together for a few years now, and this might be the only chance we have to go together. She already has a son who is about 9 months old and she has plans for more, so traveling will become more difficult in the future. Also, getting a 12 day vacation from work was not possible. I have been planning to teach in Korea since last spring, so I decided I might as well take my trip, then go straight to Korea. As you can see, I'm making quite a leap. My budget is going to be stretched quite thin, so I don't want to be in the position of putting in notice at work and not having a job lined up. I also don't want to have to pick from a few sub-standard jobs because I'm in a hurry just to have something.
I am just wondering if schools planning this far ahead is a sign that the management is more responsible, cares about the quality of the teachers and the education of the students, etc. If you have any thoughts on that, please let me know. |

No, I don't think it is a sign that they care about those things. I wish it did, but I don't. I do think it is important for Korean schools, whether they be hakwons, public/private schools or universities, to have the appearance of having something their rivals have or don't have. If the other school has a white face, then we have to have one, too. If the other school does not have a white face, then we need one before they get one.
Once they get the white face, the schools are hard pressed to figure out what to do with it or how to use it to their (their students) best advantage.
You should ignore what I say. I'm kind of sour lately. My school goes from the extreme of saying, "Play games with the students all hour so they have a good feeling about English" to "Have them repeat the same 4 sentences for an hour". |
