We all know that when it comes to arrogance, an overblown ego, sense of importance, and downright stupidity, no-one can top the Korean Adjoshi.
On a daily basis, we see examples of their arrogance.
You must get out of their way even though they are driving on the wrong side of the road!
The other day I experienced the ultimate in Adjoshi arrogance. I came home and opened the door, my small dog got excited and started jumping up and down (outside the apartment) and barked a bit. An adjoshi is leaving my neighbour's apartment while this is happening ( I have never seen this guy before). My wife is at the door to greet me. The adjoshi starts ABUSING my wife, saying that our dog is annoying him. She says he is annoying us, I have a bit of Korean and ask, 'do you live here', he refuses to answer. Eventually he lies and says he does, we ask which, building, apartment etc, he refuses to answer.
Our neighbour likes us, and likes the dog, this a**hole doesn't even live in our complex, and has a go at my wife so I have a go at the a**hole.
I find, the older, more stupid, uglier, fatter the adjoshi is, the more arogant they are. There are of course a lot of Agjoshis are nice guys.

Are dogs allowed in your building? (and are you absolutely sure of that?)

Not to say the guy was right in any way, but if I was in "someone else's building" and saw someone smoking, I might take offence - regardless of whos building it is.

"the only real downer for the evening was a cluster of three Korean guys who wouldn't shut up the entire lecture. Most annoying. Many men in Korean society are spoiled rotten, and it often shows in how they behave in public, drunk or sober. This isn't true of all Korean guys, of course,* but the culture as a whole places a premium on the care of sons, and many sons are permitted to act like assholes instead of being disciplined. Perhaps that's one reason why military service is important in Korea: it serves to counteract the ill effects of too much bad mothering."

I think you fail to see the point. He was rude and condacending towards my wife. and he can do this, Why? because he is Adjoshi!- To be revered and worshipped, whilst my wife is:
1. only a mere woman,
2. younger than he is,
3. with a foreigner, and finally
4. animals are not to be treated with kindness, only to be beaten and eaten.

If he or his fellow adjoshi friends, spat a lougie onto the street, that's ok!
If he or his fellow adjoshi friends, throw up or piss in the streets, is there a problem, of course not!

What I'm refering to is a certain type of adjoshi. The 'I'm number 1, world revolves around me adjoshi.

Goldmember,

Sometimes, a story just needs to be told, and the facts are so obvious, they don't need to be analyzed. Obviously the guy was a dick, obviously many adjossi's are dicks, and obviously the guy needed to get his ass kicked for speaking to your wife that way. The end.

That says it all.

In modern Korea, wealth is God and the age-old confucian ethos, which puts the middle-aged man at the top of the heap, takes second place to the almighty won.

Don't bother to analyze them...the main reason is that they are stupid and uneducated. A pig is a pig is a pig...
You assume they know the difference between proper manners and Korean manners....and even care about it. They do what they do because it suits them to do it.
Of course back in my country they keep their d@mn fool mouths shut...you would never see this behaviour back home from the Korean Americans.

This jogs my memory of a particular conversation I had with an arrogant/ignorant adjoshi in his wife's kimbap diner. We got talking about food as I was in the process of chowing down some omrice.

He kept asking me whether it was delicious. I kept trying to respond in between mouthfuls that it wasn't bad. Then he let go a pearl of wisdom: Korean food, Number 1- okay?! Then he repeated it.

After my meal, I politely asked him if he had ever tried French food, Mexican food, Thai food, Lebanese food: he replied in the negative. Actually, it turned out that adjoshi here hadn't traveled out of Korea and was only acquainted with Italian pizza/spaghetti and western hamburgers.

I kind of find this conversational pattern (their sweeping statements) indicative of Korean men in general- a disproportionate of self/Korea in the larger world.

This reminds me of of another conversation I had with one of Korea's most successful international photographers. He had traveled as most photographers do, hence, his view of Korea was more balanced.

He told me that Korea's #1 problem is that boys in the family are too spoilt, so the result is that they are growing up as 'mommy's boys'. Consequently, the girls in the family are adopting a the masculine role - like role reversal. The result is that Korean boys are more likely to cry at the drop of a hat, while the girls bully them. It is rather a comic scenario.

I have a girl in my class. The boys often tease her about her appearance. She often smacks them in the head. Then they cry to me that she's hitting them. I laugh at them.

I think you're bitter and defensive because you don't know the language and you don't feel like a real man because you can't even defend your own wife properly.

Aw.

Are you married or do you have a girlfriend Corporal?

Cause if another man was disrespecting your girl I don't think you'd classify you reaction as bitter.

Come on man!
