Yeah stupid title. "To" implies a future course of action. Korea has been promoting the Korean wave for a couple years. My last visit to Incheon airport I noticed they had a whole section devoted to the k-wave in the departure lounge.

It fills hotels with tourists. I'm sure Toronto would like to find a way too to fill hotel rooms like Seoul. Seoul might just be the envy of the hotel world.

Sure beats the crappy "Dynamic Korea: Invest!" ads you see on CNN.

The super deluxe hotels are expensive, mostly because they do cater to business travellers and Japanese who are rather accustomed to paying those prices. Have you ever stayed at the Walker Hill or the Imperial Palace? Try it some time.

Simply because Seoul is not high on the list of North American travellers doesn't mean it's not a tourist destination. There's a whole continent called Asia Korea is happy to draw on and does.

Anyway, there are a large number of cities that would envy Seoul's hotel vacancy rate.

I stayed at Walker Hill and Hyatt Incheon , several times. Good to impress another but not very impressive on myself or worth the price.

Incredible that I enjoyed much more, my regular stay at Hotel Max, 70,000 won and starbucks at the door, than these 400, 000, pay me more and more and more, basically standard rooms.

I really don't understand the economics. In the high end hotels you pay 7,000 room service for a cup of coffee and 4,000 for a tooth brush. 8,000 won for a movie. No razor, no extras supplied, even hand cream. While at the love motel, you walk away feeling like a millionaire, whirlpool in the room, movies, internet, vibrating bed..... even tampax for the lady..........no charge.

Weird.

I agree... there's nothing as much fun as a high-end love hotel, with its round beds, jacuzzis, and porn-movie cheez, even if you're there for legit reasons. Much better than an overpriced, cookie-cutter hotel chain.

I always get a few uncomfortable looks when my more annoying students brag about 'the Korean wave', and I tell them, "You do know what happens to ocean waves, right?"

It's mostly business, and Japanese coming to shop. Seoul is not, and never will be, a workable tourist destination.

Says who? You have any surveys of Chinese, Thai, Malaysians, etc. that say Seoul is not a workable tourist destination?

That is something, I think, the Koreans are going to have to brace themselves for. Remember the disco backlash. What happens when Korea falls out of fashion and the Japanese and Chinese start to mock what they used to love. Koreans don't have very thick skins.
