Say you had a 7900GTX. Would you add a second one in order to gain SLI capabilities? Thoughts? Suggestions?

No.

Save your cash and get an 8800.

no opinion - mostly because my only concern with a video card is getting the ablity to run 2 monitors.

If I were you and had a relatively small display ==> no.
If I were you and had something like Dell 2407 monitor (1920x1200) ==> still no. I admit that the SLI might be fun in this case, but I'd still prefer to have only one card (i.e. 8800 or some other new card).

Like Demophobe said, wait and get a faster card later. I think that your games must be running pretty nicely with all eye-candy on already. Even if you slammed in another 7900GTX the improvement wouldn't be worth the cost. But let us wait until Crysis, UT20007 and Quake Wars come to the stores... then it's time to throw away reason and get the fastest DX10 card that money can buy! (Um, at least Crysis needs a DX10 capable card to work well. Not sure about the others, though.)

Crysis will still work under DX9 but some of the flashy new features will be disabled.

If you're going SLI you might need a new PSU given that you're drawing twice the power for graphics. Nvidia recommends an SLI certified power supply. A single card is probably more convenient and economical, as well as quiter.

Here's a guide from Nvidia:

Does anyone know if the Xbox360 supports DX10 exclusive features or is it now last gen?

How does the 8800 compare to what's in the 360?

The 8800 will end up being almost faster than dual 7800s (driver maturity). It's a brand new architecture, a far more advanced card on every level, supports DX10 (not that that means a lot as there will still be one more generation of cards before DX10 is launched and at least 2 generations before DX10 games become widely avaliable) and the 8800 has more horsepower where it is needed and less where it isn't.

The 7800 is a powerhouse for sure, but it lacks the finesse of the 8800. This is typical of Nvidia; they make a great GPU, then spend 3 or 4 card cycles ramping up the clocks with no significant architectural changes.

The 8800 is a really nice card. Well balanced and well designed; I can see it being my card of choice in +/- a year's time. By then, the price will be sweet and it will run any game, though perhaps not at 1600x1200, 4xAA, 16xAF, but it will do well.

This is the big question on a lot of peoples minds. DirectX 10 isnt here yet, DirectX 10 games arent here yet. Do you really need this video card now? We cant answer that for you, but we can say by looking at our evaluation data that weve seen real benefits in the here and now with todays games. We were able to run at higher in-game settings, higher resolutions, higher antialiasing settings, faster performance and better image quality all around. These factors impact your gaming experience in a positive way today. We cant predict the future, but we can tell you what you will experience today.

SeoulFinn had some pretty good points. What resolution do you run at normally, and what kind of frame rates are you getting?

F.E.A.R. Test (all in FPS)
Resolution = 1024 x 768
FSAA = 4x
Anistropic = 16X
Everything else maxed out in the game.

Min. - 25
Avg. - 63
Max. - 162

0% below 25
20% between 25 & 40
80% above 40FPS

This is with my faulty core 2 duo. Wait until I get the replacement in.

I may be jumping to a conclusion, but are you running 1024x768 on a 17 inch screen? Am I right?

Anyway, if you play at that resolution you ain't got no reason to go SLI! Very Happy First, get a decent 20+ inch wide screen monitor with them damn pixels on it and only then... get that 8800GTX or better! Very Happy
