Any other cheap options of getting to Australia in early-mid January.

i.e. Incheon - Bangkok then buying my ticket to Sydney there?

I like thailand and I wouldn't mind a few days there, especially
if plane tickets will be reasonably cheap.

There is a youth fare through HCM city.... not sure of the sut off age though. At Christmas its 1.2mil including tax, but after the peak season it should still be much cheaper than most other airlines.

There is only one budget airline that flies from Asia to Australia at the moment which is Jetstar which has just started international flights http://www.jetstar.com/home.html..

I don't know really if it will be any cheaper as you will still have to pay for a ticket from Seoul to bangkok...
If you are not prepared to fly that then you are better off just paying for a ticket from Seoul to Australia as buying 2 seperate leg tickets will cost more...

the costs to bangkok are so expensive you might as well just aim for a stopover somewhere depending on your destination.

yeah, flights to bangkok will be expensive this time of year I guess.

Actually I reserved tickets to Thailand a few weeks ago, will be interesting to see what the price is, if they are to exy I will cancel.

Doesn't have to be bangkok though, will look into the singapore option as another poster suggested.

Tiger Airways goes between Singapore and Darwin.

Prices vary daily.. just check the website for dates and adjust accordingly. I paid around US$200-250 after taxes roundtrip.. something like that. I recall a little over US$100 one-way.

CLG you mentioned whypaymore.co.kr but don't you need a Korean ID number for that site?
