| What exactly is a Maestro card? Nonghyup gave me this thing. I'm guessing it's only good at the ATM and the convenience store. -Jeff |

| You can also get cash out internationally with ATMs that have the maestro sign. |

| ...however the international access has probably been disabled due to banking regulations. Unless you got lucky and slipped through the cracks. Foreigners aren't allowed to withdraw their Korean money overseas. |

I just recently got a NongHyup international bank card, mailed it home to my mom and she can take out money with it. So easy, so convenient and I seem to have slipped through the cracks well enough. She just did it yesterday (from Canada) in fact. I know a guy from England who is doing the same thing as well.
I got my card in Cheonan...the local branch said they didn't have international cards but I went to the big branch downtown and they hooked me up. |

| If they have stopped foreigners' from having an international bank card, why does my KEB card worked in August when we went to Taiwan? I know I've had it for a few years now but from what you said, they did a blanket end to EVERYONE's cards? |

I think this is a recent development.
Mine worked in 2004, and 2005. But, this time around this past October in Thailand? Nope.
So, I went to the bank today to get a new card (lost it yesterday), and asked if it was good for international service. The lady says it is.........mmm-hmmmmm. This was not going to happen again. I had her call some higher authority to find out for sure, and sure enough..........it is not good for international service. I asked as to why, and she said because I am a foriegner.
Ya know, Korea really has its head up its ass.

It still works because you're lucky. I don't think they're effecient enough to do a blanket ban easily. Maybe when you try and renew it you'll be refused. Or maybe the people at your branch don't know about the regulation. Or maybe there are different rules if you are on a different visa to an E2.. I don't know about that.
I was issued an international ATM card from KB* in September. They telephoned me the next day to say that they had made a mistake, and that foreigners were not allowed international ATM cards due to new banking regulations. Some bank branches aren't aware of all regulations so some people get away with having international ATM cards, or wiring money without a stamp being put in their passport etc. The regulations are not enforced uniformly.
Until recently (I just lost my wallet) I had the KB* Korean card with the maestro symbol, however it had been deactivated for international use.
I'm not inventing the regulations. Someone posted a link to them recently I think actually. Or maybe I read them somewhere else. They are just not universally enforced. |

I really can't believe how different it is from bank to bank. However, I know friends who have gone to the same bank and been rejected, while I have never had a problem. I have both an international ATM card from Woori and an international Check/ATM card from Hana. My Hana broke last week and went in to get another and no problem. When I got it, I even asked them if they were sure I could have it, and they said "of course".
As well, I have never had my passport stamped at a bank when sending money home.
I guess I am one of the lucky ones. |

in the least i have tried at many locations to try to use my Belgian masters card
it did not work. |
