My school is asking 900 000 won security deposit. This seems overly extreme to me. They say they will refund it to me 2 months after completion of the contract. Is this extreme? Is 2 months later the norm?

I had a 900,000 won deposit. They said they will reimburse me a month after my contract.

Wrong, as usual...unless you're talking about folk w/ housing allowances who have to secure their own housing, or if you agree to one in your contract (but I don't know why anyone would agree to one).

The last time this came up, the consensus was any money involuntarily taken out of your paycheck for a deposit was illegal.

Yes, but then I believe the counter-argument was something like, "but if you agree to it in your contract it becomes a legal deduction."

Then the counter-counter-argument went something like, "well, you sir, are an idiot!"

Which was then eloquently parried by, "F$#@ you, A$$@&*%!"

Etc, etc, ad nauseum....

IF you allow them to take a deposit, it SHOULD be returned at your DEPARTURE and NOT 2 months later.

They can confirm and pay out your bills on the last day of your stay.
They can check your apartment to verify that there is NO damage.

I have NEVER had a problem squaring away my bills with any previous employer on the 2nd to last day of employment. A simple call to the utility company takes care of it all.

There is NO reason for them to hold it for 2 months after your departure unless they have NO plan to return it at all.

If you agree to that kind of clause you can fully expect them to steal it from you (find all kinds of excuses to NOT return it) and you will be 10,000 km away and unable to do anything about it.

DO NOT AGREE TO THOSE TERMS.

thanx guys. I suggested an inspection of the apartment when I leave and proof/receipts to show that all bills have been paid. Hopefully this works out.

Which makes it not illegal, thank you for supporting my argument.

Spliff....deposits are not illegal unless they take it from your pay without a contractual agreement......

I agree with Tom..they should give you back the deposit on your final payday.
