Absolutely, CBC.
This single act -- and also that they were something of a committee and not a single dictator -- separates the Sandinistas from every other leftist govt that has graced Central American and Caribbean history as far as I am aware off the top of my head. This is indeed something Ortega and the others should be congratulated on and respected for. |

Just an update.
Seems many others are of the same opinion of Ortega, don't know whether to have faith in him OR not. Seems like, at the end of the day, he is all about having power. So it would be a dicey call. Does Nicaragua today have enough checks and balances, official and other to control his power wish......
Two articles musing on this and other Ortega ironies....

Nicaragua I
GUATEMALA CITY: The irony could not be more poignant. Twenty years ago Monday, Ronald Reagan went on national television and admitted his government's involvement in an arms deal with Iran, the proceeds of which, we later found out, were diverted to the Contra rebels fighting a Marxist regime in Central America. Now Daniel Ortega, the man those funds were aimed against, has just been elected president of Nicaragua. |

Ortega, again
Nicaragua's top Sandinista, Daniel Ortega, was once pro-Marxist, but now he's pro-Ortega. And that's the problem.

Nicaragua's top Sandinista is back - and with him international anxiety. Daniel Ortega won the presidency of Nicaragua on Nov. 5, raising fears that Hugo Chvez and Fidel Castro now have another faithful acolyte.
But while Ortega's election is bad news, it is not because he is still a Marxist revolutionary. He is an old- style Latin American strongman who, we fear, will further weaken Nicaragua's democratic institutions and retard economic progress. Washington's challenge will be to figure out how to help curb Ortega's authoritarian impulses, without pushing him into Chvez's arms. |

Glad to see you finally recognizing something fundamental in Latin American and Caribbean political affairs. |

Haha, jolly good fellow. So you know me so well! I grew up many years ago with a steady diet of Llosa and Marquez, I know what a banana republic is (not the store) and also very well, the "El Grande" streak that runs through Latin American politics/society.
Not a recent revelation of mine. Any epiphanies of note, I'll be sure to keep you abreast of. Okay mate? Then you can finally stop the condescending snobbery with which you address anything I comment on, reflect upon, utter......
Either that or as always , you can crawl back into your ancient hole until sometime around March.....
