| Hi all! I am totally new to Mac's and I just have a few questions about getting one here in Korea. First, I am wondering about voltage? When I return to the states is there any kind of adapter I will need when I plug it in. Second, I don't want my OS to be in Korean! Is there an easy way to change this to English? Third, I am planning to buy an external hardrive as well but I dont know any good brands. Any advice? Any advice will be greatly appreciated! |

The Tiger OS will give you an option when you first boot up as to what your language preference will be, so yes, you can have an English OS.
The connection for the computer, i believe to be universal, in that it has an adapter already on it.
You can buy it in COEX at the big music store. The Apple Store is now under renovation and the music store is hnadling the sale of MAcs until the Apple Store opens again
I ust bought a Mac Mini there |

If the computer is bought in Korea, it'll come with the Korean plug, but it is swappable with the other travel plugs if you buy the travel pack. I got mine Stateside, so just slide on a Korean US-to-Korea plug adapter. The voltage is converted automagically.

You should check out the Apple Store Korea... they will give you a small discount for being a teacher... bought one last year and recieved about a $150 discount on a Powerbook.
Also, external drives... I don't know if they are accessible here but I use a Lacie D2, given to me as a gift just before coming to Korea, and have had nothing but good things to say about it.
If you're willing to order from the states, there's a great site with really fast drives and good prices that I have used in the past and have had nothing but good experiences with...

The Apple Stores in Korea deal almost exclusively with LaCie external drives, all of various clours and flavours. |

With the teachers discount as far as I can tell you just call them up and tell them you're a teacher. The number is 080-3404-622 and you get a 5% discount. Not huge, but better than nothing. New macbooks come out in about a week with core 2 duo and higher RAM. Not sure if they speak Englsih on the phone, I am having a Korean help me out.

Link-Os is the HUGE electronics and office supply shop next to where the Apple Shop used to be. They took over for the Apple Shop while they are under renovation. Maybe if you had provided a shop name I wouldn't have thought you were confused. A "music store" is not exactly the first place you think of when you want to buy a mac. |

I also use a LaCie and it's top notch. I put all my music and tv shows/movies on there and it's all played from there. I also have bittorrent set to download directly to it as well. I can download and watch stuff at the same time.

I agree that I would not expect the Music Store either. I could not find the Apple Store, so I asked the information desk and they directed me to the music store. Had I known Link-o was selling them I would have went there as I think the process would have been a bit easier. |

Instead of an external hard drive, I'd recommend a normal 3.5 hard drive and an external enclosure. It's cheaper and you'll have more hard drive space to boot (no pun intended).
You can order Mac products online through apple.co.kr; my iMac came with a teacher's discount and you can use a foreign credit card. |

I don't, I have a PowerPC Mac Mini. I'm hoping like hell to get at least a Macbook when I shoot home in January. If I'm very lucky I'll be able to swing for the Macbook Pro, but we'll see.

I would be careful with these. I know several people who have bought these external enclosures only to have them fry out a few months later. These things tend to overheat to quickly. If you purchase one make sure the enclosure includes a fan. |
