"Teacher! Be careful. If you have baby with your wife it will be stupid"

"Hey, I know I'm a little crazy, but why will the baby be stupid?"

"Cuz teacher, dirty blood. Only little Korean. Not good."

It was so funny, cuz it wasn't even like she was trying to be rude or malicious. It just seemed so completely logical to her. As well, aside from one girl that laughed, all the other students kinda looked at me like "it's true man. it's true"

Yeah, she was only 15. And yeah, kids everywhere say stupid stuff. But this is just a perfect example of "ahhh, Korea Rolling Eyes"

I wish I came here in the late nineties (post '97 IMF):
Why?
#1 I'd have been younger and would have scored (been scored by would be more accurate) a good few young hot Korean women even more in my prime, and

#2 I could wear a t-shirt with a big rough necked foreigner face laughing and a big phrase "Contaminating the gene pool since the nineties" and a smaller phrase saying: "Since 1999" like those Korean bakeries have displayed on their front.
And on the back "Your beloved daughter helped pay for my night vision goggles" .

You know she didn't formulate that idea on her own. Some adult or other information source must have told her. That's the truly sad part.

It's truly sad someone would think that a mixed kid would be inferior. I have to agree with Qinella, she didn't come up with this notion on her own.

Yup, today I was teaching a 55 year old exec and we wandered into the "one race" bit. He started on about a blue birthmark that ALL Koreans have and. well, you all know the rest.

By the end (after many leading questions), he seemed to doubt all those old teachings.

Lety's hope he goes home and teaches his children that doubt.

I've sometimes been amazed and shocked, though now used to, some thing that youngsters say. Not long ago I taught a grade 4 girl who had lived in Canada for two years and spoke English very well, and the stuff she would say was incredible, just full of racist ideas, a sense of Korean superiority, and a lot of odd beliefs about history and other countries and cultures. It made for interesting conversation actually.

There wasn't much point arguing with a 10 year old, but I'd just suggest often, "maybe, maybe not, I'm not sure what you're saying is correct, a lot of people have different opinions etc..."

Kids often have black and white, right and wrong views, I suppose. The language barrier often means we don't hear them, but when you got a kid nearly fluent in English you can hear some unbelievable things.

It's sad to hear what some kids say. It's also a bit of a drag to hear anything that the speaker assures you is the unanimous view of all in the group. One kid or adult says a thing you can hardly believe, and the others all nod in agreement.

I've had converstations with teachers that went on about how they don't like English and that Korean (the language) is far superior and "their" language. He even has a cup that says...

uri mal, uri geul (I think geul).

No doubt! Since I got engaged I've been having a lot of fun telling classes I'm marrying a Korean to see some of the various reactions. I'd say about 60% are delighted and impressed, 35% are bewlidered ("you can do that Shocked !"), and 5% are quite upset. I'd love to meet the parents of that 5%.

And yes, I quickly brought up Daniel Henney, Hines Ward, et al. Got a lot of "ah yeah, yeah" ... i.e "yeah right, teacher. lucky few, but don't count on your kids being so lucky"

I would have been like "you mean they'll be less intelligent than someone who, on average, studies English for at least ten years, yet is still regarded one of the worst English speakers in the world because the system of English education they grew up in is crap that is most taught by non-English speaking teachers who focus too much on grammar instead of pratical English?"

Then I would have punched her in the face, Dennis Kang style. Who is she to call Dennis Kang stupid?!
