Canada won't sell out

Canada won't "sell out" on human rights to promote trade and investment with China, Prime Minister Stephen Harper says, reacting to a cancelled meeting with China's president. |
It so nice not to see weak minded politicians in power. |

The 'Conservative' leader is standing up for progressive human rights, whereas the old 'Liberal' party would have been in China signing business deals. It's a weird, weird country sometimes...

It only makes sense to take a stand when you're dealing with someone that can't be reasoned with. China, however, can be reasoned with (to a certain extent). I see no value in 'standing up' to China especially since the comments were made *after* China snubbed a meeting with the PM. |

In a move deemed by many to be a diplomatic snub earlier this week, China abruptly called off a private meeting between the two leaders-apparently because of Canada's criticism of human rights in China, and because of the case of a Chinese-Canadian being held there. |
Why is he such a stud? What's so great.
So he says that China has "Bad humans rights"...pointing out the obvious. They cancel a meeting. Why is he a hero?
You can bet they'll meet and I GAY RUN TEE!!! you that the tories are gonna do business with them.
Guarunteed!! He's a politician...of COURSE they're gonna do business. |

Even if the Conservatives make complete asses of themselves and get voted out of office, their being in power will still have been good for the country. If Paul Martin had won last time he would have come to the conclusion that:
1)Canadians don't care about scandals and will always forgive the Liberal party, and
2)Negative campaigning (Soldiers with guns. In cities. In Canada. We did not make this up.) works. Let's do more.

I'm hoping for a complete reorganization of the system including an elected senate and some proportional representation. |

The stance on china is lunacy. They are the world's emerging economic Giant. We ignore human rights abuses in countries all over the world. This is simply posturing, and ineffective posturing at that. China's business with Canada is relatively inconsequential, and even if we 'raise concerns' and refuse to meet, it wont make any difference anyway, since all of our products will still have "made in China" stampped on them.
This is one of the dumbest FP decisions in Canadian history. That doesn't mean one of the worst, just one of the dumbest. It's an issue that barely resonates with the electorate, even the Chinese-Canadian electorate, and serves no useful purpose. Who is our foreign affairs minister again??? |

I agree that it is also a stupid decision. China is one of those countries that is probably moving in the right direction concerning human rights, albeit, slowly. The meeting is going to happen again now anyways, and hopefully things get worked out. Right now, Canada is China's second largest trade partner, we can't afford to eff it up. Only four more years until another liberal government, which is good news. |

Four more years???? Try 6 months, as soon as they pick a leader and with those poll numbers the Con's are going down in the spring. |

I can't help but wonder though.. as a large portion of Canada's immigrants come from either Hong Kong or Taiwan.
Both sets of immigrants predominately got into Canada because of a fear of China. The HK changeover and the potential Taiwan 'take-over'.. all reaction to China the villian.
I can't help but think that there must be some weird feelings about that anyways between China and Canada. |

Well the meeting's back on- it should be interesting to see who'll be eating crow when whatever deals the meeting produces are announced. Will the Conservatives bring mighty China to heel on the subject of human rights? or will they dirty their hands and make Liberal-like business deals without changing China's human rights policies a single iota?
Or will it be a non-event with no outcome, just so much hot air to influence polls and sell papers?
Stay tuned... |

Damn straight, us heathens spend so much time partying, drinking, shooting drugs and having homosexual sex on an hourly basis that we need some more organs to keep up the lifestyle. |
