I am heading to Indonesia at Christmas, and will be traveling around West Java.
Any tips for what shots I should get in advance???
And can anyone recommend a good travel doctor (preferably cheaper than Itaewon's International Clinic).
Thanks in advance!

Any hospital can hook you up.
Influenza, Hep A, Hep B, tetnus booster (if you haven't had them already). If you are doing the jungle thing (rural travel) you may want malaria prophilaxis in addition to a good mosquito repellent.
Remember that if it isn't boiled, bottled or freshly peeled you shouldn't eat it. |

West Java? Like Jakarta, Bandung, etc.?
What kind of shots are you looking for?
Java is the most developed and very city-oriented.. you shouldn't have a problem if only in those cities of West Java. |

If you spend much of your time in city areas you'll want to be guarded against water and food borne diseases like typhoid, i always get the Heps confused, but the food / water transmitted one is good to have. Tetanus is always important to have up to date.I usually also make sure before heading to developed countries to have my menengitis vaccine..
Take a look at the CDC's site before you leave. While I wouldn't bother with the vaccine it's good to know if there's a Japanese Encephalitis issue in the area you're going. If there is be absolutely vigilant about not getting bitten by mosquitos - even during the day.
Last but not least, assuming you're a single guy, heading into West Java can feel like being a lamb to the slaughter women-wise. Bring as many reliable condoms as you can carry. |

Thanks for your replies. I will be in Jakarta, Bandung, Indramayu and Ciberion.
Mosquito-borne diseases (malaria, jap enc, dengue fever) are my main concern. I had a jap enc shot 4 years ago. Does anyone know if it will still be good? And is there a shot for dengue fever?
One more question. I thought to get vaccinated against Hepatitis was a 6 month, 3 course shot. Has that changed?
Cheers.

There is NO shot for DENGUE fever. If there is an outbreak, be VERY careful about mosquitos.
Hep A is 2 shots at 6 months.
Hep B is 3 shots over 3 months.
There is Twinrix which is a combination Hep A and B vaccine but I don't know how long between shots.
In either case, start the series if you didn't have them before. It will be of some help.
Hep A is food born (you can get it from the ice or food).
Hep B comes from kissing or more intimate contact. |

I think Twinrix is 3 shots at 0/1 month/6months.
I did have the first 2 shots of Twinrix (4 years ago) and was told that if I missed the 3rd shot I would have to start again (to the best of my memory).
Anyway, thanks all for your help.
