What is the dress code like at the average english school?

It differs from school to school. I normally wear casual shirt or golf shirt and jeans, but sometime casual slacks.

I refuse to work for any schools that require you to wear tie.

I've also heard that there's a chain school that requires teachers to wear lab coat (Dr. Teacher).

I brought ties, a jacket, one pair of dress slacks and some no iron 100% cotton shirts. I'm glad I did because it worked well for meeting everyone. After that I bought some more docker like pants and wore the shirts with and without a tie. At my public school some women wear jeans but men don't. -Jeff

There's no such thing as an 'average' English school. Every workplace is different.

In an 'appearance' culture such as this one, it doesn't hurt to spiff out a little on the job. I never wear jeans to work, because I prefer the contrast between my work life and the rest of my life. If I wore jeans to work, I'd have to come home and put on a suit.
