Okay, how about some hookah and new friends? I get paid the 7th. How about Saturday the 9th?

I'll be down there for dinner (Casa Maya) at about 7. Anyone who wants to join me should meet me in the park by the swingset. If you need subway/walking directions, just ask.

When will the rest of you be free? I'll go over right after dinner. Those of you who are unsure of how to get there should head to the park around 8. I'll wait by the swingset until 8:15. I'll try to get a good place upstairs. (I'm going to Hongdae this weekend. If I can reserve the private room, I will.) Just come on by and look for all the foreigners! I'll probably wind up there all night.

Look for the brunette with curly hair and a pink purse. My name's Julia. If you're really worried about getting lost, PM me for a cell number.

Original Message!

If anyone's into chicha, there's a great new place in Hongdae. They just opened last night. The atmosphere is amazing (see if you can get one of the corners on the second floor and you can sit on cushions on the floor, surrounded by candles) and the price is right (ten bucks a hookah).

It's called Gr8. (On the sign, the 8 forms the basis of a hookah drawing.) It's right across the street from Route 66. (Down by Tin Pan 1&2, a bit down from the park). You can't miss it. It's on the fourth floor of the smaller brick building, above Ska.

Ryan, the owner, spent several years in Seattle. He owned a few cigar shops, so he knows his stuff and has great English. He's really friendly and loves to chat. (So if you're from Seattle, definitely go in! He loves chatting with people from his old stomping grounds.)

Order a rose hookah. You'd never think it would be good, but it is. Musky, perfumey, sorta sweet, sorta lemony. Like being wrapped in a warm cloud of rose garden.

Tell him Julia reccommended it. Wink

that's amazing.
I miss my shisha pipe. I gave it to a friend before i left.
I agree about Rose, it's a really subtle flavour.
If they have peach, i'd suggest that one as well.

Anyone know of a shisha bar in Ulsan?

I don't know about Ulsan OR Nambi. I've only been here six weeks! I just got lucky with this one. I will tell you, though, it's definitely worth the trip. It takes me an hour to get to Hongdae by subway and I'd go there just to have a hookah or two at Gr8.

I'm definetely bringing mine with me!

A question about cleaning though...what is the best way to clean the pipe, bowl, etc? I don't want to mess anything up with it. Can I just use water to clean everything?

generally run water through the pipe should do the trick. If it's really bad, something like a coat hanger unwrapped should do the trick.

If you need help cleaning it, i suggest you get a job in ulsan Laughing

i've never smoked out of a hookah before but I've always wanted to try.

obviously they're not going to give you illegal substances at this establishment so...

what do they give you? tobacco?

what does it feel like? does it get you bent?

Most hookah establishments provide you with shisha in arabic/nargilah in hebrew.
It's a mixture of dried fruit, molasses and tobacco. It tastes really good and gives you a bit of a relaxing feeling, more of a strong tabacco high than anything.
The water filters all the tar out of the tobacco so it's not as bad for you.

Occassionaly, you'll find a place that puts opium or hash in the pipe mixed with the shisha tobacco

Not true. It was just a few months ago I read a news report based on research showing that hookahs are, in fact, worse for you in term of carcinogen intake than regular cigarettes. Don't be fooled by the romance.

When you get a really good batch, you can fly for a few seconds.

Can you buy Salvia in Korea? Are there any restrictions against it?

I tried salvia this summer, had heard mixed reviews about it. Some people find it to be the shittiest 10 minutes of their lives, others find it amazing. I described it as crack for potheads.

I had a great time but it was free. I don't imagine it being worth spending a ton of money on it.
