Well, Thanksgiving Day is Thursday (isn't it?), so I started to get ready this weekend. I made my gingerbread. Sometimes I put whipped cream on it, but usually I prefer it plain. This time, I decided to try an orange frosting recipe I found recently. It came out pretty good. The extra hint of orange flavor goes really well with the other flavors. But it is a bit sweet for me. I think I'm going to look for another way to add that orange flavor...maybe an orange syrup or something.

I picked up my turkey legs at the store today. In past years I have roasted whole turkeys, but I just don't feel up to it this year. Anyway, I want some turkey on Thursday and not next weekend (I have a wedding to go to). I'll make my pumpkin pie on Wednesday and then on Thursday evening make a batch of dressing and pig out on turkey legs, mashed potatoes and gravy, dressing with lots of sage and walnuts, pumpkin pie and gingerbread. That should be enough for one person.

You have gingerbread for Thanksgiving? For me it's more of a winter thing, and it's not that wintery in early October in (non-northern) Canada. Strangee Wink

For gingerbread I find nothing goes better than plain ole whipped cream. Wanna share your recipe? Very Happy
By the way, did you ever try those cinnamon rolls?

rockstar, supper will be served around 8 on Thursday. Door's open. Let me know by Wednesday and I'll pick up another turkey leg. You bring the wine.

Novernae, YES, I tried the cinnamon rolls. Turned out pretty darn good. I'm sure the next time will be even better, after I get my cinnamon roll chops down.

I know what you mean about gingerbread being a winter food, but I've been in the market for some comfort food lately, and gingerbread is one of my major comfort foods.

Recipe from an Amish cookbook one of my grandmothers gave my mom when she was first married (the first Thanksgiving my mom didn't thaw the turkey out soon enough and ruined her first big family dinner...Her mom decided she needed some help in the kitchen.):

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs
1 cup molasses
3 cups flour
1 cup sour milk
2 t ginger
2 t cinnamon
1 t cloves
1/4 t nutmeg
1 t soda in 1/4 cup boiling water

1. Cream the sugar and butter, add the molasses and eggs.
2. Sift the flour and spices together and add it to the sugar/butter mixture alternately with the sour milk.
3. Add the soda and water.
4. Bake 30 minutes @ 350 degrees in a well-greased sheet cake pan.

Orange Frosting

2 cups powdered sugar + 1 T
1 T softened butter
1/4 cup orange juice
2 t orange zest
1/2 t vanilla
dash of salt

Frost while the gingerbread is still warm.

(Personally, I think this is too sweet. But the orange does add something special.)
