Any Turk would direct you to Sezen Aksu, the Little Sparow, the Queen of Pop. Meh. She is a great songwriter, but I'm not a fan of her voice. If you want classic/classy in Turkish song sung by a woman, well, I'd suggest Candan Ercetin's Elbette.

If you insist on English, then anything by Koko Taylor is the gold standard of female blues singing. And, of course, the gold standard of her songs is Wang Dang Doodle.

Natalie Merchant (10,000 Maniacs) is good.

Tracy Chapman

Suzanne Vega

Cowboy Junkies

Kate Bush

Michelle Shocked --- Here's a nice, somewhat sad song (Come a long way)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=o6UKmWdFPtI

That's all I can think of right now, sure there are many others of course.

Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, and the hot little number from Evanescence are not exactly classic but are by far my favorite female singers.

I forgot about Regina Spektor. She blends jazz, blues, rock and pop. Incredibly interesting piano driven music that everyone should check out.
My favourite tracks of hers include buildings, pavlov's daughter, 2.99 cent blues, on the radio and edit

another great female musician is liz powell from land of talk

Another hyped montreal next big thing band, but definetly deserving of the hype.

Considering the first set of nominations included Cher, any reasonable notion of 'classic' went out the window immediately...

Gypsies, tramps and thieves: http://fileanchor.com/80041-d

No matter what one's opinion on Cher, that song is a classic.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'll check 'em out. I'm not a huge Tori fan but I do like the song 'Crucify' very much.

Also, call me what you like, but 'Only U' by Ashanti is AWESOME! Shocked

I don't know that putting the song up so people can actually hear it is going to further your argument, but at least it's proof that 'classic' is a relative term.

I'll second PJ Harvey's "This is Love".

Also...

Sugarcubes/ Bjork- Birthday
Patti Smith - Rock n Roll Nigger
