When I first started here, my director asked me if there are a lot of Koreans back in my city in The States. I wanted to say that I can't tell the difference between Korean, Chinese, and Japanese people, but he probably would have gotten offended.
So what's the difference? Do the Japanese have a darker complexion than Koreans? Do Chinese people have a slightly different build? Can you even tell the difference? |

Hell, my wife is Asian and NOT Korean and Koreans can't tell the difference.
If they can't, why would we be able to? |

There's some facial feature and body shape stuff that can indicate Korean/Japanese/North/South Chinese, but it's all frequency based and thus often wrong. More reliable is dress, hairstyle and mannerisms. Takes a while to pick up though. |

But Koreans are "one race" apart from all others! Surely Koreans would be able to tell their 'own kind' from 'foreigners'? |

I'm caucasian but I can usually tell Japanese and Koreans apart pretty easily (though obviously there are exceptions). Racially they're nearly the same, but fashion is different, as is general body language/facial expressions etc. Of course language is a dead giveaway, but even if they aren't speaking I can recognise a Korean person's behavioral reaction to a given situation compared with a Japanese person's. It's usually quite different. Not really sure how to break it down into finer detail, but I just know that can almost always just 'tell' a Japanese or Korean person when I see one, especially women. (I find hairstyle is one of the most important factors - Japanese and Korean girls do their hair up in quite different ways).
Chinese, on the other hand, are often really difficult to pin down, mainly because China itself is a multi-ethnic country, and Han Chinese diaspora is extensive. Take a trip to Thailand for example and you'll see tons of ethnically Han Chinese, though they are culturally Thai and look different from Chinese in China. Same goes for Chinese in Western countries. |

When my girlfriend and I went to Vietnam, every person there spoke to her in Vietnamese because they couldn't tell the difference. Same thing happened in Japan pretty often, but not as frequently. In Taiwan, she couldn't really tell the difference. When you use fashion and style, it is easier to tell, and there are general looks to Koreans vs. Japanese etc., but often it is just really hard to tell. |

I really wonder, you know. Koreans always claim they can spot a Jap *snap* just like that. So how come they never pick out my girlfriend as Japanese? |

I can tell them apart on a pretty good basis. It's many things, a few physical things (Koreans tend to have bigger calves). It's also mannerisms and other things. It takes a while, but I get it right about 80% - 85% of the time. It's not something you can be taught on a webboard. Same goes for face reconignition software. The teach the software by showing it millions of pictures. Or voice recongnition software, they teach it how to recognize someone's voice and accent by using many examples. It's not something you can learn from a webboard |

I'm curious. Can you guys tell the average German (ofcourse there are exceptions) to the average French person. I can. I can tell if they are Eastern European (though I can't get any more specific, I have very little experience there). Same for South Asian, I can tell they are south Asian, but I can't say Thailand or Vietnam (on most occasions). |

Some Japanese women have cracked teeth and stooped legs and some Chinese women are really ugly and some Korean women put too much make-up.
Japanese women speak Janglish and Chinese women speak Changlish and Korean women speak Konglish. Any more question ??
