Anyone have any ideas for a phone conversation activity (not as much numbers but speaking) or game for large class of 5th grade elementary students? |

I just made up my lesson plan. My co-teacher's first response was that it was great, but five minutes ago she came back and told me it was a little boring and could I please make up a fun game for them instead. I swear, I feel more like a party planner than a teacher in Korea. But whatever, I get paid whether the kids like my lessons or not, whether they learn anything or not.
Anyway I wrote up a worksheet that goes like this:
TELEPHONE CONVERSATION
Mike: Hello, is Jenny there?
Jenny: Yes, this is Jenny.
Mike: Hi Jenny, this is Mike.
Jenny: Hello, Mike. What's up?
Mike: Let's (1)_________. Can you meet me at (2)___o'clock at (3)__________?
YES
Jenny: Okay, that sounds good. See you soon.
Mike: Okay, goodbye.
Jenny: Goodbye.
NO
Jenny: Sorry, I can't. Maybe another time.
Mike: Okay, goodbye.
Jenny: Goodbye.
***********
(1)
see a movie
play soccer
have lunch
go shopping
go swimming
watch a baseball game
have pizza
go hiking
study English
go to a concert
(2)
various hours, which I won't bother to list.
(3)
the movie theater
the park
the restaurant
Lotte department store
the swimming pool
World Cup stadium
Pizza Hut
우면산 mountain
the library
Seoul Arts Center
So on the back is a grid with the hours listed in one column, and blanks for them to write the name of their friends and what they are planning to do. They must ask 7 friends (ie, repeat the dialogue each time) and fill in the schedule. Pretty easy and basic, and even if it is boring and repetitious, at least they would be learning something.
Instead we'll probably listen to the morally inappropriate (for elementary school) song by Tommy Tutone, 8-6-7-5-3-0-9/Jenny. I'll try to avoid explaining the context of the song, maybe give a sheet with the lyrics and a few blanks for them to fill in. Then we'll quickly move on to some kind of telephone game, probably involving bananas as props, since we don't want the kids to get bored while they are "learning."
Ha, ha. Funny how people at home think my job is so edgy and exciting, just because it's in another country. The truth is that it's just as ridiculous and monotonous and pointless as any office job at home. |

Put something in a jar and shake it so it rattles. Let the kiddies guess what is in the jar. A stroke of the razor-edged ruler across the palms for each wrong guess. Two strokes for no guess within the time limit. |
