Hello folks,
Hope this is the right place to post this question....
I was curious if anyone knew approximately how much it would cost to travel from Jeollanamdo to Seoul (both ways), either by plane, bus, or train, and the normal travel time. I am not in South Korea yet, but trying to see if it's feasible for me to work in Jeollanamdo and visit Seoul once a month. Are hotels fairly cheap? (I am not referring to love hotels or anything of the sort, just a place to stay for a few days). |

Take the luxurious yet supercheap, huge comfy seats on the intercity express buses.
As for cheap hotels, there's a couple for under fifty bucks a night near the Nambu bus terminal you'd arrive at in Seoul.
Believe me, you can afford to travel to Seoul once a month and still save a lot of money. I visit the concrete jungle less often than that, but not because of money considerations. It's always cheap to travel in Korea (except regarding Jeju Island perhaps). |

Most major cities from Jeollanamdo(as all of Korea) arrive at the Gangnam Express Bus Terminal not the Nambu....
Where in Jeollnamdo are you living...you have to be a little more specific..
IT will cost max 40 000 won one way... |

There's a lot of smaller cities (ex. Cheonan, Suwon, Bundang) that are not Seoul, but close enough to visit often, if you are worried about it. Maybe take a job there if visiting Seoul is a big issue for you.
My other piece of advice: chill out and don't worry too much about stuff like this before you get to Korea. You'll find stuff to do to entertain yourself, whatever city or province you're in. Just don't work in some small, nasty town where you're the only foreigner and you'll be fine. |

Yeah, but express buses from several smaller communities arrive at Nambu.
It all depends where he is. |

Actually, I don't have a clue where I'll be in Jeollanamdo. The company that will provide the placements gives the option of choosing a small or very populated location.
Any suggestions?
I beleive I have the choice between these places:
Mokpo City
Yeosu City
Suncheon City
Naju City
Yeonggwang County
Yeongam County
Jangheung County
Boseong County
Hampyeong County
Muan County
Jangseong County
Haenam County
Gokseong County
Gurye County
Gangjin County
Goheung County |

The quickest way is by KTX train from Mokpo, Naju, Gwangju, or Songjeong. Depending on which of those four stations you use, it costs between 33,000 - 38,000 each way, and takes between 2:50 to 3:10. No bus goes that fast. |

Excuse the big bump, but I noticed you said "yes" to Jangheung. Any particular reason? Jangheung-eup's a fine town, I guess---a little bigger than where i am now---and it looks like they're doing some building. I'm just curious if you knew of anything extra special about it. |

What is the "company that will provide placements"? Are you working with EPIK? I'm just curious. I would n't want to just be placed somewhere without choosing. SHould be relatively cheap to go to seoul once a month. For a weekend, maybe 200,000 with bus, hotel, and good food. |

It's an old post, and he's already been placed. With Canadian Connections you can make your top 3 choices, and they'll try to put you there. Of course, if you're unfamiliar with the area it's easy be clueless about a top 3. I just resurrected the post after searching for Naju, and seeing that Jangheung was in the "Yes" column. I was curious. |

It's location is almost perfect for me (was considering the southwest coast between Yeosu and Wando and so I've considered it before. I've been down thereabouts on trips to Boseong, to west coast islands, to islands around Wando (Bogildo, Shinjido, etc) and I think it a good place to base one's outdoor weekend travels if one is so inclined like I am. (I chose instead a small town in western Gyeongsangnamdo halfway between Jiri Mountain and Namhae).
I should have mentioned "yes" to Gurye county as it's not far from where I am (borders the provinces) and ideal for those who like hiking (gateway to Jiri National Park). It's got good access to the big city of Gwangju to zip to before shops open on saturdays when one wants to do that. Gurye isn't the most charming town but it has an excellent bus system to shuttle in and out the many, oh so many hikers I see often when I pass through, Koreans mostly but foreigners too.
So, to recap, for beaches and islands and coastal jaunts Jangheung is nice, for hiking Gurye. There really is a lot of beauty in the outdoors down here in the southernmost region, and not just in the summers either. |
