Well, Mary Travers was the lead singer on Peter, Paul and Mary's "Leaving on a Jet Plane" (written by John Denver who eventually left the world after a plane crash...) Probably one of the most sentimental/emotional pop classics...
Here's a classic performance of it by PP& M joined by John Denver on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LvtDb0ZPwQ |

I like the Irish pop/folk colleens; your Kirsty MacColls, your Maire Brennans and your Dolores O'Riordans. Zombie is a great tune. |

"Midnight at the Oasis" - Maria Muldaur (Actually, I'm not familiar with the song, but having heard her excellent country blues singing on Jim Kweskin and the Jug Band albums I'll give her the benefit of the doubt since it was her biggest hit...)

"Blue Bayou" - "Different Drum" - Linda Ronstadt (solo and as lead singer with "Stone Poneys")
"Yesterday Once More" - Karen Carpenter (lead singer of "The Carpenters")

| There are too many great songs written/sung by too many great women. Kate Bush gets to me every time. Yesterday I was listening to Annie Lennox singing the Eurythmic's song I Love You Like a Ball and Chain, and thinking "Wow!" Does anyone remember that song? All that passion and unrequited love! Lennox's extraordinary vocals... My spine tingled... |

I don't believe women should be allowed to sing!
Their place is in the house busting their husbands' balls and making the lives of their significant others miserable.
That's why God put these vixens on the planet in the first place.
They are like the Eagle who eats the liver of Prometheus for all of eternity.
Women rule the Earth. Their time is much too valuable for singing. |
Cute. We'll do our very best to make you miserable...won't we ladies. |

"Loving You" - Minnie Ripperton
"Goodbye to You" - Patty Smythe
"Heart Breaker" - Pat Benetar
(Everything in Between)
"Love is a Battlefield" - Pat Benetar
"Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" - Melanie
I Still get goose bumps from this one
Lay down lay down lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown
Lay down lay down lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown
We were so close there was no room
We bled inside each other's wounds
We all had caught the same disease
And we all sang the songs of peace
Lay down lay down lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown
Lay down lay down lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown
So raise candles high 'cause if you don't
We could stay black against the night
Oh raise them higher again
And if you do we could stay dry against the rain
Lay down lay down lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown
Lay down lay down lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown
We were so close there was no room
We bled inside each other's wounds
We all had caught the same disease
And we all sang the songs of peace
Some came to sing, some came to pray
Some came to keep the dark away
So raise candles high 'cause if you don't
We could stay black against the sky
Oh oh raise them higher again
And if you do we could stay dry against the rain
Lay down lay down lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown
Lay down lay down lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown
Lay down lay down lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown
Lay down lay down lay it all down
Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown...
