Is sending my degree certificate to a school in Korea normal practice or not?

Sounds a bit odd that they want the original as if they lost it I would be less than chuffed.

Yes it is. You can get your degree notarized in your country, by a Korean Embassy or Consulate, and send over that copy though. By law, you must submit a Bachelor's Degree in order to receive an E2 visa.

Its normal in korea for employers to keep the degree certificates of their employees. they frame them so all customers can check the credentials of anyone working there. Its also their habit to lose them, or pretend to do so, to keep some sort of control over their employees.Either way, they regard it as little more than toilet paper.

Send a copy stamped and verified by your embassy or J.P., its good enough.

Do not give your employer the original of your degree. You will likely never see it again.

For the definitive answer - you can do one of:

1) Send your original - it may be held hostage (to prevent you leaving), lost, damaged or destroyed by the hakwon.

2) Send a Korean Embassy certified copy - contact your nearest consulate for specifics on how to get your degree certified. Specifics vary from consulate/country to consulate/country - ie: the process in the UK is different from the US is different from Canada.
