| I had an interesting conversation with my co-teacher about this the other day. He was telling me that the alcohol content of soju used to be 23% and they lowered it to 20%. He's a Korean guy who loves his soju. I was surprised when he said that he thought that, in his opinion, they should lower it even more. His reasoning was that he thought that alcoholism and public drunkenness was becoming a serious problem in Korea. And, of course, everyone drinks soju. I have to admit, not too many days go by when I don't see some middle aged guy totally fall-down drunk on the bus or subway. By the way, anyone know why they lowered the alcohol content in soju in the first place? Just curious. |

To sell more. Less alcohol content == more soju to get the same buzz == more soju sold.

Does anyone know if soju consumption is rising or declining? I see a lot of younger people who just hate the stuff, and don't want to get drunk off it. Well, actually, almost everyone I meet hates the stuff (especially Koreans who like it  ), they are always chasing it down with some food. Anju isn't just some idea they came up with, it's a necessity  . Still, anyone have the answer to that question? |

#1: Are you saying that you see more 'middle aged' drunks than 'university aged' drunks. I'd say you need some prescription glasses.
#2: 'becoming' a problem? I think you are a few centuries past the deadline for that one.
#3: I'd say when your company stops setting aside beds for the drunks to recover on company time, then we have something to discuss. |

They recently DID lower the alcohol content in 참이슬 soju -- from 20.1% to 19.8%.  |

According to a Korea Times article the soju market increased 2.7% last year, which suggest a rise in consumption. Unless it's being used as a cleaning liquid.

| Soju, I love it. Especially while eating sam gip sal. My wife and I often knock back 4/5 bottles. The lower alchohol is a bonus and it tastes just as good as the higher percentage. Long live soju. |

Soju is great largely of course because one can get f***ed for a few bucks, but it's dreadfully dehydrating. Last weekend when I had a big session, next day I replenished by body water by drinking LOADS AND LOADS of coffee, green tea and water all day long. I took only one piss all day - a dark, thick, green piss.
Sorry for the excessive detail, but it's not without importance. Your piss can often be taken as an indication of your current health.
Soju is the most dehydrating alcohol I've ever come across. |

Strong enough?? As a whiskey and vodka drinker, I wish it was stronger, but smoother, like real vodka.
Sometimes I mix soju with the Aloe juice that has the bits of aloe in it. It is surprisingly good. |

Guess so. Never seen an Andong dude put some back. I like to mix it. It's far, far better than the Chamisul crap. If Park Chunghee drinks it, you know it simply HAS to be good.
As for soju being strong, it's not. It's just that Korean drink that stuff like it's going out of style. Shot, pour, shot, pour, shot, pour. Do that with tequila and report to me what happens...
