Lebanese minister assassinated
Al Jazeera + Agencies
Pierre Gemayel, a Lebanese cabinet minister and leader of the Christian Phalange party, has been shot and killed in Beirut, according to security sources.
The sources said his convoy was attacked in the Christian Sin el-Fil neighbourhood of Beirut.
The Phalange party Voice of Lebanon radio station confirmed his death.
The shooting comes amid increased tensions in Lebanon. Shia ministers withdrew from the cabinet two weeks ago in protest over power-sharing in Lebanons government, and Hezbollah is considering street demonstrations if early elections or a national unity government are not forthcoming.
Gemayel, son of former president Amin Gemayel, was a supporter of the anti-Syrian parliamentary majority, which is locked in a power struggle with pro-Syrian factions led by Hezbollah.
A correspondent for Al Jazeera said that there was panic in Beirut following the assassination, with people rushing to get home. |

Samir Geagea recently warned of a possible assassination coming from some pro-Damascus, Syria faction. He is careful to confine himself to the Christian strongholds among armed guards. So does Druze leader Walid Jumblatt. The partisans of the Druze and the Maronites will be encouraged to arm young men from the sect to defy Hezbollah and whomever is trying to shoot at their leaders. Michel Aoun's alliance with Hezbollah will make him look worse in his community. I did not particular like the track record of this ex-Lebanese president who was assassinated, but he was a member of the democratically elected opposition. The forces of fascism are out there. I think the U.S. government will work harder to arm the Lebanese armed forces and increase aid to the government. I also think it will help if Israel reduces tensions in the area. That is part of what makes Hezbollah strong. |
