Indeed. Elephants have been badly affected by the break up of the family. No role models for the youngsters: no wise experienced matriarch to lead the group. Sadly poaching, hunting, loss of habitat, fencing, etc etc have all had a dramatic impact on the intricate family structures of these wonderful creatures.
Its a bit like African society. So many wars, so many adults dying of AIDS, you have a generation of orphans raising more orphans. It takes generations for such a society to recover stable behaviour. |
