Take Korea for example. They have troops in Iraq. If a Korean soldier raped and killed an Iraqi girl, do you think he would be tried and convicted in a Korean court.

Yes, but only due to international pressure. And the sentence would probably be more lenient. But for some reason, I don't foresee that happening.

FYI for anyone interested: A Korean soldier did kill an Iraqi civilian last year. I do not thnk he was punished.

That alone suprises me, I must admit. Was it intentional?

Why does it surprise you? During the Viet Nam war the Koreans were well known for their brutality.

Because, Korea is all about face, and Iraq is a very well highlighted, international quagmire. You would think they would be extremely careful (they don't have that many soldiers there) to not embarass their country on the world stage.

I'm not saying the guy didn't get what he deserved, or that he was not gung-ho to participate, but he was not the ringleader. In situations like these, if you, as a soldier, do not participate you are considered a liability and friendly fire is often used to solve the problem of this liability. Soldiers know this, and this threat of life mixed with the pressures of war is pretty good at convincing a person to forget their morals. This is the root of the problem which of course will never get any mainstream press (it was mentioned in the guardian) because it's really not something that can be fixed without a major overhaul of the systems.

Sorry, I guess I should have clarified that further. There will never be any major discussion of that in the American mainstream press, that would be like biting the hand that feeds them.
