I have now spent a year in Korea and am deciding to spend some more time here. I want to make sure that my time here is worth while so I'm trying to get involved in as much professional development as possible by joining KOTESOL and Starting a Masters online through Indiana University. My question to everyone out there who has gone back home after a year or more in Korea is this. How did your time in Korea look on your resume to employers when you started looking for jobs? I'm hoping to spend maybe two more years depending how long it takes me to finish my masters and will look for teaching jobs once I return home to the states. Anyways I would appreciate any feedback. Cheers |

As with any jobs or experiences in life, it fully depends what jobs you are applying for. If the job you apply for is unrelated to teaching, then it would not look good. If you write your resume to suit the job, focus on the strengths of your Korean experiences to match what the employer is looking for, then it looks good on your resume.
Applying for an engineering job with a resume that only has teaching English in Korea would not look good. Applying for a job working with children teaching in Korea looks good. I would say that the only thing that wouldn't look good is an online Masters. Many jobs and bosses still look down upon distance learning. It is becoming more acceptable but overall not considered equal.
Teaching abroad is a valid career choice and a well written resume can take any experience that you have had and make it fit for any job. Enjoy your time in Korea and learn all that you can. Good students make good teachers. |
