Over the past few months I've noticed something very strange: Korean men don't even look at attractive Korean women in their midst.
This is very different than where I'm from: when a good looking woman walks by, every man in visual range checks her out (while trying not to). Here, I'm always the only one looking unless there are other foreigners around.

Even stranger is that while the men don't seem to notice, other women do. Try to see how an attractive K-woman reacts when another is around- in my experience, they always seem to check them out (albeit in a sizing up kind of way rather than a sexual way).

Has anybody else noticed this? Any theories on why it is that Korean men never seem to notice the Korean beauties?

In general, in a Confucian based culture, people don't show their emotions in public.

Korean men will have a perve too.. they might be a bit more subtle about it (when sober), but they will have a look.

That said, they have grown up with Korean women, and probably have higher standards than your average waygookin with the yellow fever surging through his lonely, horny veins.

If you walk into a place with a beautiful Korean woman I guarantee that all the Korean men will notice.

Beautiful women are out of reach for ordinary Korean men. And they know that.

They are only for foreigners or rich Korean men.

I never really thought about the western tendency to overtly "check a woman out" among men. I do it naturally... I guess it is overt, but I think it's far more enjoyable than the eastern tendency not to look (or covertly look).

It seems pretty obvious to me why foreigners check out beautiful Korean women in Korea. We come from countries where the norm is obese unattractive women... so naturally we check out the gems (beautiful women) in our own countries because they are so rare to see. Here we see a higher number so we're checking out more women. That said... I check out attractive foreigner women here too.

I've noticed that older Korean guys can be pretty obvious about checking me out, sometimes accompanied by eye-contact, a leer, a thumbs-up gesture, and a "Goooooooood."
