Anyone know of a good book I can pick up cheap, or download on how to teach. I have a lot of learning to do so I can properly teach these kids, and I think a book might do me some good.

There must be libraries that wouldhave books like this....

A book recomendation would be useless without knowing what ages you are trying to teach.

Book on teaching high school are useless for young learners and vice versa.

Classroom management techniques vary significantly depending on what ages you are dealing with as well.

For young learners, do a back search for some of Tomato's posts. There is a goldmine of information on HOW to teach young learners (k-3). If your kids are older 3-6, then there is some upward adjustment for methodologies but not a significant change. Young learners learn by see and do. Songs, activities and games.

You get a jump when you get to middle school and spend more time on the books and less time on "fun" activities.

High school sucks and I can't help you there. Just keeping them awake is a big enough chore.

To learn basic teaching techniques I would look at Jim Scrivener's 'Learning Teaching. This is a book equivalent of a CELTA course (without the live teaching element). Try reading the book with a note pad, making notes on teaching points, then using them in the classroom, then writing notes on how they worked. This sort of self-appraisal and feedback will help you continually develop.

The second book that is useful is Raymond Murphy's 'English Grammar in Use'. This is a student self-learning book for grammar, but is very good for making lessons from based around very clearly laid out chapters. A page or two from this basically is a lesson. Choose a page, teach (or elicit - get the students to come up with it) the grammar point, then get the students to use the new grammar in their own way, so it becomes theirs. It's great to encourage creativity in using the grammar here. Depending on the age acting out dinosaurs or aliens, or whatever, can be fun!

Amazon links below - I don't know where to get these in Korea yet, but they should be able to send them here if you order off the net.

I hope that's useful.

Also, some teaching materials (other than the learning-to-teach books) can be found on the bit torrent networks. Whether they are legal downloads or not is up to you to ascertain, but if you go to www.mininova.org and search using the keywords 'English', 'TEFL', or 'grammar', you will probably come up with a list of resources that may interest and help you. It's nice to hear that you are taking an interest in becoming a better teacher :~)

www.bogglesworldesl.com

and

mes-english.com

are both goldmines of resources, filler activities, and ideas.

http://iteslj.org has lots of good articles and good ideas

You could read "Teaching English to Children in Asia," it's available in most major bookstores. It's useful and the idea/games section in the back is really good.

cheers and good luck

Look at my link below. Scroll down to 'T' for 'Teacher Training'. There are lots of free, quality online training/linguistics related articles, that you don't have to go out and buy a book.
