It's built into the OS. Just double-click the file, should open.

UnstuffIt and any of the Stuffit and StuffIt Expander utilities will do it. Expander does pretty much every archive type, including RAR

That's funny, it won't unstuff RAR files for me. I found a version of WinRAR for the mac, but the damn thing is command line only. I never even read the instructions, just tossed it.

You can find an unofficial version of 7zip that works with Mac OS X at this website.

http://homepage.mac.com/krmathis/

7zip is an excellent freeware program that opens zip and rar files. I don't know if this version works but its under 1 Mb so its worth a shot.

Really...I can open and decompress .zip and .rar files by just double-clicking on them.

StuffIt Expander has no problems (for me) with RAR files, but you can also try another one called UnRarX. It also works for me without a problem.

I just wish those torrent guys would stop USING rar as it's a pain in the arse. Everything is already compressed as far as it'll go, so what's the point of it?

Seriously, why do you need any of these programs with OSX?

I suspect that you have a program installed that you don't know is installed.

True, the Archive Utility is pre-installed with the OS, probably somewhere in the Unix system files, so no need for 3rd-party software.
