It's a bullsh*t analogy. Vegetarianism has nothing to do with "faith". Personal opinions aside, it's entirely rational, ethical, and supported by facts as well as common sense. Most vegetarians aren't preachy, if anything they merely present a few inconvenient facts, which tends to piss off a certain type of defensive meat eater. Most meat eaters acknowledge the facts, but choose not to care (which is fair enough, I believe we're all hypocrites in some fashion).

Yet I don't lose any sleep over it, and for the most part I doubt most vegetarians give a ratsass personally what you eat (the notable exception is whenever dog meat is brought up). For me it's just yet another thing in the world that's "too bad", but watcha gonna do? During a debate on a forum, however, there's inevitably going to be "preachers" on both sides, but only vegetarians seem to be able to make a sound ethical case. In my experience on here meat eaters are only able to concede that it's not ethical (but that they don't mind doing it anyway - fair enough), or else get offended (often the case).

At any rate your completely lame comparison of vegetarianism to Mormonism is both false and arbitary. All you're really trying to say is you think it's annoying. I could just as easily compare your stupid and pretentious perception of yourself as the "voice of reason" on Dave's to Mormonism Rolling Eyes . Get real.

It's been said before, neither Mormons or Veges are neccessarily proselytising freaks, but there are enough of them in both camps that it's become a stereotype. That's the only reason to make a comparison between the two, but it's a valid reason.

Like the person who just has to make obvious fake coughing sounds whenever someone lights up, or the guy who's discovered the amazing benefits of Amway there are enough vegetarians who want to ride their hobby horse on high, lording their moral and ethical superiority over the rest of us.

I know quite a few vegetarians (no vegans) and for some it's a non-issue. They're vegetarians. I'm not. If I'm eating out with them I'll eat meat, they eat something else. Fine. No-one mentions it...life goes on.

I fell into a trap on one occasion thinking that this common courtesy was a widely held value and travelled out to the newest vegetarian restauraunt in town with three vegetarians. One close friend, a sister of close friend and acquaintance of sister I'd never met. Acquaintance appears normal at first glance, but after determining the vege, non-vege status of the party turns on me and sneers..."So, you're a carnivore are you"?

He must have been the high priest, because that was the cue for the sisters to start preaching about the benefits, of the way of the truth and the light, and the dangers of meat eating heresy. Even my close friend!! A long night and crap food.

I have no problem with vegetarians. I admire their integrity. Just don't waste my perfectly good Saturday night trying to convert, enlighten, or sell me something I didn't ask for and don't want...

...and Mormons stay off my doorstep.

I have lived with a few of vegetarian girlfriends, none of them attempted to convert me. None of them minded me cooking my own meat, though none of them would cook it themselves.

I never saw any of them attempt to convert anybody else, though I did see them become frustrated with the continual requirement by some flesh eaters to justify their position.

I compared the annoyance of the two groups, not the two groups. Incase you haven't read, most people on this thread find someone who disrupts a meal to "preach" what they believe is annoying.

Fine then: "laogaiguk's stupid and pretentious perception of himself as the "voice of reason" on Dave's is just as annoying as Mormon missionaries". "I think the title says all I need to. They "preach" just as much".

Got it?

Incase you are incapable of actually reading, I have supported vegetarainism on numerous threads as a good lifestyle. I just hate vegetarians, who feel morally superior to everyone else (like missionaries) and feel the need to "preach" before and during a meal. Unfortunately, I can't just tune them out like most people do you.

Right, well missionaries preach. That's what they do. Vegetarians don't, as it is not their job to do so, despite what you may think. Most people don't "tune them out" or have any problem with them. This is just a case of you (and a few others) trying to slander vegetarians, who you find annoying.

Really, no problem there. But perhaps you could change the title of the thread to set it straight. Maybe something like "Vegetarians, who feel morally superior to everyone else (like missionaries) and feel the need to "preach" before and during a meal are just as annoying as Mormon missionaries". Either way, sounds like a pretty lame basis for a thread...

I find anyone who bothers me with telling me how I should change my lifestyle when I do not ask for it as annoying. The fact that you haven't had it happen to you (big f-ing shock there, you being one) does not logically mean it has never happened. Your argument has nothing. But, for proof, there are two big name vegetarians on this board who do come into threads and preach vegetarianism, even if it has nothing to do with the topic.

My argument? Read my first post on the thread where I debunk your original premise (ie. the Mormans and all that crap) completely. And then you come back trying to salvage yourself by claiming all along you merely meant (while leaving the Mormons out of it): "I find anyone who bothers me with telling me how I should change my lifestyle when I do not ask for it as annoying".

No, I did, but that is not what I was trying to do. Mormon missionaries annoy people in places they shouldn't. Vegetarians annoy people in places they shouldn't (ie at the dinner table). You are making assumptions when I was just trying to clarify something for you. I hold by my title.
Also, you said this (along with other things)
Quote:
Right, well missionaries preach. That's what they do.

I bet there are a lot of people who will be saying the exact same thing as you are about vegetarians as about missionaries (ie don't paint them all with the same brush), which by saying vegetarians aren't like them (your argument), you are doing the exact same thing you are fighting against. Anyway, any vegetarian that preaches (60% of the ones I have met, more for others apparently) are the EXACT same as a mormon who is preaching about their religion.

I've made my points.

Anyways, preachy vegetarians, not only are you annoying as hell and usually deserve to never be invited out to anything, you are hurting your cause by doing so.

Anyone also realize that the overt vegetarians on this board (ie taking out Hater Depot, Kermo, etc) are fundamentally wacko?

...I could debunk you all day... it's easy.

Your premise is laughable. I could say "you annoy me at places you shouldn't", and then proceed willy-nilly to compare you to Mormons in a thread. But that would obviously be stupid, so I would never bother.

And again (just to indulge you), all you've been saying is that something annoys you. By your logic anything could annoy anyone at "the wrong time". Yet you have no real point, except that you want to slander vegetarians specifically, whom you haven't demonstrated to be any more annoying that anything else (except to you personally). Yours was a stupid point from the beginning, and has become even more absurd with your desultory posturing. You should just admit it.

Evidently you're not that bright then. A missionary preaches necessarily. It's the whole point of being a missionary (they're on a "mission" to spread the word of god). They are proselytizers - so it's their job. I didn't even make a value judgement, I merely pointed it out as a fact to expose your pathetically false logic. You said vegetarians preach like missionaries. I debunked that statement.

au contraire (see above)

Wink Nice to see pull completely random and ludicrous figures like "60%" out of your ass... just completes your ignorance. Evidently you haven't met many vegetarians...
