Cdn stereotypes abound on Net thanks to homemade 'Canadian Idiot' videos
| Quote: |
The stereotype of the Canadian as a beer swillin' hockey nut is alive and well on the Internet, thanks to the computer prowess of a bunch of teenage Americans.
Young fans of the parody song "Canadian Idiot" by Weird Al Yankovic have supplied the Net with cheeky homemade music videos about the Great White North's "Monopoly money" and "silly accent."
[ ... ]
Weird Al has described "Canadian Idiot" as written from the perspective of an ignorant American and calls his song "a love letter to Canada."
[ ... ]
But it's clear that some Canadians just don't get the joke. Dozens of angry comments have been posted on websites featuring the homemade videos, with viewers admonishing the young filmmakers for encouraging the stereotypes.

Some people need to lighten up.
I am both a proud Canadian and a huge Weird Al fan. I am so buying this album when it comes out in December.

You mean popping out in laughter. That was funny. |

| I've been trying for quite a while to find the 'official' video by Wierd Al... no luck, apparently it doesn't exist- yet. |

| I liked the song (and don't mind either way about whether it's mocking Canada) but the video was unwatchable. I hid it behind another while the song played. |

I'm sorry if this has been posted but this is a brilliant example of reportage if you ask me.

Canadians shouldn't be offended by Weird Al's lyrics, says Phil McCracken, a 13-year-old fan from Columbus, Ohio.
"It's really making fun of the Americans and their views on the Canadians," says McCracken

I'm a Canadian and I found it pretty funny. I, however, did not like his knock at Kraft macaroni. Nobody makes fun of my beloved KRAFT DINNER. Weird Al, those are fighting words!!!Americans only wish they had the ingenuity to produce something as wonderful as K-D! |

| Just watched it again, now even more convinced it's making fun of American attitudes to Canadians. The last lines say "Maybe it's time for a pre-emptive strike"... |
