I have to admit, I bought some SPAM the other night. It was an impulse buy. I smothered it with a ton of mustard and I liked the first few bites. After that it went into the garbage.

I suppose it was a throwback from my uni days when my room mate and I would eat anything just to live with the luxury of beer. After a few cans (of SPAM) I realized why my mom never bought it and vowed never to eat it again. However, last night I decided to try it one more time out of morbid curiosity.

Anyone else eat any food they didn't like back home because of nostalgia?

Once since I started my new contract in September. Once in a very great while, like twice a year, I eat a can with crackers adn mayo and mustard. Trouble is, it gives me the most hideous gas, so I can only do it on a friday night.

I buy Spam. It's great in Budaejigae, which my Korean husband likes. Also taste quite good in fried rice.

Ok, agreed. Spam is actually ok in an omellete. Well, cooked in some way (not soup).

I got a case of it as a present. Its easier to fry than bacon when its thinly sliced and tastes great. I buy it in Canada now because of my fond memories of ovenless, Korea-cooking.

I've had a lot of contact with Spam here, more than I ever expected I would before I came to Korea. I received a massive box of 8 or 10 cans one year as a gift. Strangely I began eating it regularily, frying it and putting it into fried egg sandwiches. Quite nice.
Then we had a party at our bar "Speakeasy" down here in Gwangju and I wanted to play some fun University style games. We came up with a "Spam Carving Contest". It was hilarious. 6 Teams of people 4 people were given a hunk of Spam on a plate and had to carve it into something cool. Our Chinese exchange-student-bartender was the judge. He chose the representation of the twin towers as the winner. It was two buildings with little spam airplanes crashing into them and crumpled spam scattered on the plate to represent...people. I thought it was in bad taste but then again so is the idea of a spam carving contest. I guess you give a chunk of spam to a bunch of drunks and this is what you get.
Anyway, it's funny the crap that you begin to eat here out of necessity. Do you ever "dress up" your Ramian? You know get really fancy with it and chop up an onion and stick it in there, maybe crack an egg and drop it in, have a little toast on the side for dippin'

I bought it on one of my first days her, thinking it might be a viable mince substitute for spag bol. It isn't.

Egg+ramen with is pretty good, very filling when you want to eat cheap. My favorite is the orange brand ramen with bacon, kimchi and garlic chopped in. Infact thats my dinner 3 or 4 nights a week.

I love it when you go to Nolbu restaurants and order Budo Chiggea and you can order an extra dish of SAVOURY hams.. More like SAVOURY mystery meat.
