That's how you do it, ban something that's illegal anyway. Go Korea!

Minister of Culture and Tourism Kim Myung-gon Friday said that the government will ban video game arcades from using gift certificates for payouts in April next year as part of the efforts to eradicate illegal gambling.
Kim also apologized to the public in a press briefing, accepting criticism after the Board of Audit and Inspection of Korea on Thursday held the government accountable for the recent video gambling game scandal over ``Pada Iyagi or Sea Story.
``As the main government body responsible for the gaming industry, I apologize to the public for causing such a big controversy with addictive games, Kim said.
``I feel totally responsible for the audit result and as head of the ministry, I will try to improve the gaming licensing system, he said. |

Umm, how's that going to stop illegal gambling? They'll just have a different payout system.
One of my favorite trips to Japan was when I went to a pachinko parlor and won over $100. The little old guy helped me count up my chips, gave me the tokens, and showed me the alley booth where they paid out the cash. I jumpseated out on a company plane, so the whole trip (2 days /1 night from Chicago) ended up setting me back around $30 total. |

That's some budgeting my friend. You watched TV in your capsule, went to a pachinko hall and went home?
Anyway illegal or not the Korean gambling halls need to go. It's not even like a casino where there's some moderate skill involved in your chosen game of chance. You put money in.... you sit and stare at the screen...it either gives you money or it doesn't. It's retarded, or a factor in retarding people at least. Push money in, sit, stare, listen to the 50+ full volume machines and smoke. That's it. Burn them all, and introduce bingo, at least it's social. |

The old adjosshis won't know what to do with themselves.
First they have the Sea Story scandal but other halls have popped up in their place. Hopefully this ban will keep the casinos out of business.
This activity surely ruins families lives. I hope the government can introduce gambling addiction counseling as a result of this. |

Yeah, well casinos have the odds stacked in their favor. Even blackjack, the only game you really had a chance of winning against the dealer through skills, has been corrupted by new rules (in this case, the casino continuously shuffle the decks). Skills have little to do with whether you will win or not anymore. |

Well, they were working to ban illegal prostitution too a few months back, weren't they?... and i'm pretty sure that they're talking about banning illegal real estate speculation. if the police and prosecutors here ever read the criminal codes, this place might be in for some changes.

Walked a heck of a lot around Tokyo as well. The flight is a lot more relaxing when you're the only passenger (on a DC-10).

My favorite bar in Chicago used to have a special back room for their video poker machines. Complete with attendent and a beer vending machine. |

By the looks of the neon signs downtown, people that were cracking down on prostitution seem to be waiting for something new to do. |

Not to mention the 'foreigner only' casinos.....unless there's a hell of a lot more gyopos or Chinese fluent in Korean than I imagined over here....I don't think that's being strictly enforced. |

I'm not worried. My money is still good at many places......
When I sit at a table I always make sure there is one "known". If it gets hit, there is always backup... A few out there might know of the world I mean...
