I agree with this. If you are trying to give up, it is worth keeping a jar full of butts. If you are hanging out, open said jar, raise to nose, sniff deeply. Hangout subsides for some time

Whatever you do, dont tell people you're going to stop smoking (friends, co-workers, family)
If you do tell them and you get the urge to smoke and you take it up again, then looking weak in their eyes will just compound the misery of quitting
Better just do it by yourself
I stopped (finally) after many attempts by following some advice from my brother
He quit before me and said the best thing to do is to choose 2 days in a week that you can possible manage to actually start smoke-free ...for me it was monday and saturday
So if you stop smoking sunday nite then you just hang on till friday and if you really really wanna smoke again....then you smoke friday and on saturday you start smoke-free again and continue to be smoke free till the sunday (start new smoke-free cycle on monday)or the next friday (smoke friday, dont smoke saturday)
If you continue doing this you will eventually stop imo because your body gets used to going without the habit for long periods |

Try some yucky internet sites, find one you like and visit everyday, especially when you wake up in the morning...

I actually did the opposite. Told everyone and their dog that I was quitting...that way I actually avoided smoking because:
1) I hate lying
2) I felt guilty for letting myself down when everyone was supporting me
3) Kept constantly getting support messages from people which helped...
CTR, this website is my favourite...it's another good one....

Wow you did better than me then because I tried that once and instead of stopping for myself, I felt I was stopping for everyone except me^^ |

My Marlboros have a pamphlet with them.
www.philipmorris.com Look for QuitAssist. Don't know if it's helpful, though.
It references www.smokefree.gov .
Good luck! |

A month away from my 3rd year smoke-free, and it's a great feeling.
Somewhat easier to do in Ontario, given that a pack of smokes costs $8 or $9, you can't smoke in bars, and smoking outside in -20 C weather just sucks.
Props to those who quit while in Korea- that's a whole lot of willpower. |

Thanks, everyone. Some good ideas here. Some of the problem is the wife and I run a bar at nite, and she as well as the customers smoke ALOT. I have to set my mind to deal with that.
She offers to stop if I do, but I am a little nervous about us possibly killing each other if we stop at the same time. Withdrawal, and all that.
I have joined a gym, and that helps, but so far just weightlifting. Seems stupid to do cardio when I know I'll probably be lighting up later.
Anyway, Thanks. I have some ammunition to use. Cheers. |
